A Number Of Things You Need To Take Into Consideration When Selecting A Fish Pond

Pond pumps are a necessity if you have a fish pond. Any water garden will need a pump in order to create water effects. Pumps are great for creating waterfalls and fountains and will provide needed oxygen to all the life in your pond. There will be several things you need to take into consideration when it is time to buy a pond pump.

One of the first things to think about is the flow rate you need for your pond. The lowest flow rate for your pond should be half of the volume of your pond. If, for example, your pond has 1,000 gallons of water you will want a pond pump that circulates 500 gallons of water each hour. Depending on the various features you have in your pond you may need one with a greater flow rate.

The pond pump you choose should be capable of moving enough water to meet the demands of your UV sterilizer and filter system. How you use your pond will also be a part of figuring out which solar pond pump is right for you. Ponds which are small to medium in size, holding up to 800 gallons of water, will function best if you install a submersible pump. They can be easily attached to submersible filters built for this size of pond.

The flow rates for submersible pond pumps are around 250 to 4,100 gallons an hour. These pumps are fairly inexpensive and work inside the pond. The start up costs with these pumps will be low but they will cost more to run than an external pond pump. Larger ponds will require an external pond pump. External pond pumps usually use energy more efficiently and are built to deal with larger flows of water. They also work very well with biological filters which can put pressure on a pump. The typical flow rates for external pond pumps are usually between 1800 to 7000 gallons per hour.
