Children Must Be Taught How To Look After Pets

May 26th, 2010 by KittyKitty

Studies and research have found that abusive behaviour towards animals and pets occurs not just in abusive households, but in parents’ and grandparents’ homes as well.Children do not grow out of behavioural habits picked up from their parents; they pass it on to their own children. Children’s ways of treating pets and people will be learnt from their observation of their parents’ behaviour.

Kids Notice Everything.

Kids are extremely observant. They will take note and remember the way in which you love and care for your pet. Your reaction when a pet suffers an accident, makes a lot of noise, or damages cherished objects will be closely observed. Such behaviour is liable to become irksome to adults. How you react to these problems will teach your children how to handle similar problems with their own pets as they get older. Your child will get a negative impression if your attitude towards a naughty puppy is negative. Such an attitude could have a bad effect on your child’s personality and his future relationships with animals.

There’s a Right Way and There’s a Wrong Way.

If your pet is exhibiting undesirable behaviour, then you need to handle it in a constructive manner. Your children and your pet will be confused and frightened if you simply lapse into fury. Your pets are not insensitive animals, but beings that are capable of feelings and emotions. In many ways animals are similar to people. Pets do not misbehave for no reason. Simply shouting at a dog because it has messed on the carpet is useless; you must find out why it has done it.  Below are questions you are going to have to think about and take into account in order to figure out why your pet is acting up.

Do they get enough exercise?
Do people ignore them?
Are they left at home on their own too often?
Are they getting enough food?
Are they suffering from some illness?

Their behaviour could easily be caused by some uncomplicated factor. You need to look at all the options to eliminate possible causes. The cause of the misbehaviour might be discovered by carrying out a careful analysis. You may find that contacting an animal training facility or scheduling obedience training classes will help.

If your pet’s health appears to have deteriorated as well, don’t hesitate to consult your veterinarian. Check the terms of your pet insurance policy too – if your pet has developed a condition for which they will need ongoing treatment, you want to make sure that your pet plan has full lifetime cover.

Taking the easy way out by just giving up is no solution at all.

If your pet is misbehaving, do not give up and do not even think about getting rid of your pet.Taking the easy way out by just giving up is no solution at all and is unfair to both the pet and the children. Rescue shelters are occupied by thousands of pets abandoned by owners too lazy to look after them. Dogs and cats in particular will become just as fond of their family members as the members are of them. If pets need your help, you should not simply abandon them. Once you have discovered the cause of the misbehaviour you will be in a position to put things right.

If you get rid of your pet because they misbehave, it is also going to send the wrong message out to your child about commitment, trust, and responsibility. You must ensure that your child understands that a problem can be solved only by facing up to it. There is evidence that looking after a pet helps to develop a child’s maturity, confidence, and social skills.

How to Deal with Problems.

If problems occur with your pets, then it is your responsibility as a pet owner to get to the core of the problem. Usually a veterinarian, animal shelter professional or animal trainer can help you put an end to the pet behavioural issues you are experiencing by using their knowledge of animal care to create a logical solution.

How your child treats a pet will be based upon your example. Your example will be followed because children respect their parents.  It is your responsibility to teach your child the right way to care for a pet. For example, you need to teach your child how to discipline the animal without physically harming the pet or emotionally abusing it. There should be no difference between the way you behave towards your pet and your best friend. They love you and you should show them love in return. When they do something wrong you need to discipline your pet in a productive manner. Children must learn that unacceptable behaviour to other children is equally unacceptable to pets. You shouldn’t treat a pet with any less respect than you would a person. The correct way of treating a pet should always be explained to a child who has treated a pet badly.

Providing the basics of food, shelter, pet health care and love need not be difficult or expensive. The experience of having a pet will be of lifelong benefit, emotionally and physically.
