Akeisha wrote to me with some terribly smart questions. I’ve included her letter (and my responses) below:

I do see what you mean if it’s on continuously the canine will soon forget it is on and then will behave regardless. Ok, so the canine never wears a buckle collar again? This is often what irks me. I want to be in a position to control the dog irrespective of what collar is on not just the pinch or it may be no collar in any respect and also the dog still behaves. What if the owner for some reason flies the collar then they put the buckle collar on for ID however then forget the pinch collar? Then there is no control.

[Adam Replies] WRONG! The canine gets conditioned. Start the collar for awhile. Doesn’t matter.

Does one ever in the training return to the buckle collar once months of what you recommend with a dog that’s proud of doing the commands?

[Adam Replies] Yes, the dog will the command as a result of he’s happy and he likes it. However eventually, there will be something that tempts him. This can be where conditioning comes in.

Think of it like this: You’ve lived in the identical house for ten years, right? You rise up in the middle of the night and you reach for the light switch that’s to the LEFT of the door. Pretty soon, you get conditioned to reach out to the LEFT of the door.

At some point you travel and keep in a hotel. You get up in the middle of the night and reach out to the LEFT of the door for the switch… while you cognitively saw that the switch is on the RIGHT.

After all, you’ll get up for many nights– perhaps even weeks or months– and still reach out to the LEFT, although the switch is now on the right. Some folks will continue reaching to the LEFT for the remainder of their lives. Some will begin going to the right.

Those folks need to be reinforced. Get it?

Motivational corrections if on the right dog won’t frighten them or make them hate you I grasp but are not there alternative ways that except using the collar that can eventually be established thought coaching that will permit you to require the collar off and have control?

[Adam Replies] Yeah, this method you’ll take the collar off and have management, ONCE THE DOG IS CONDITIONED. However eventually you’ll have to go back and reinforce, for most dogs. And undoubtedly if you begin expecting to work the canine around new distractions that it’s never been proofed around, like chickens if the canine has never seen chickens.

Look, I do not build the rules. The canine is not a robot that you’ll suddenly say, “He is done” and expect him to act consistently for the rest of his life. Like every relationship you have got with another person, boundaries want to be established and maintained. The canine is like your wife or husband… they will eventually take a look at you.

Last question , how will the dog not realize the do not have it on since it feels a heap completely different than the buckle? Its like my id around my neck at faculty I have gotten used to it but I do understand when it is off? Simply for the record I have no downside with pinches, many members in my four-H club use them and they work great on the right dog.

[Adam Replies] Because the approach you must be using the pinch collar is that the dog (since he has restricted reason and logic) does not KNOW that it is the pinch collar that allows you to offer him sensible corrections. However it’s additional than the pinch collar. If I place the canine in an exceedingly variety of little yards, with no collar on … and I am ready to chase him down and build him come back to me, if he doesn’t return after I call… then the canine can learn THE UNDERLYING PREMISE that I can create him do it, if he doesn’t. So, the pinch collar and therefore the long line create my job easier, however ultimately, the canine knows (or he thinks at least) that I am a person of my word and once I tell him to try to to something: If he does not do it, I’m going to form him do it. And his life can be a ton more fun if he does it willingly. Therefore the canine starts to extrapolate this principle to alternative commands, too.
