A Look At The Caspian Horse

August 20th, 2010 by KittyKitty

It is said that both Alexander the Great and Darius the Great rode the Caspian horse. This horse was a favorite in the Middle East and very often the horse was a gift given to royalty. The worship of these horses during ancient times was often suggested due to their popularity.

The extinction of the Caspian horse breed was considered until 1965, then it was found again in the mountains surrounding the Caspian Sea. After they were found they were taken to Iran for further breeding and also given the name of “Caspians”. Since the number of the Caspian horses in existence totaled only 50, many breeding groups along with the Royal Horse Society of Iran worked towards restoring the Caspian horse population to safe levels.

They have done a great job. Current estimations count the Caspian horses at around 1000, and quickly they are becoming loved and popular again.

Indeed the Caspian horse breed is one having numerous fine and attractive traits. It is similar in appearance to an Arabian breed, although slightly more refined and elegant. Because these horses stand at 10 -13 hands, a bit smaller than the average horse, they are very well suited for smaller children.

This type of horse has great intellect, they are funny, nice, and curious. Horses such as the Caspian are extremely loyal and fun loving as a pet to their owner, but their usefulness far exceeds this. Caspians are perfect for jumping and running sports and beautiful enough for showing.

Depending upon where a person lives in the world, this rare horse breed can be more difficult to find. The Caspian horse is a very rare breed, and if you want one, you are going to pay a lot for it, for a while this type of horse was not allowed to leave Iran, but now they are kept in other locations where they are securely guarded and bred.
