When building chicken coops, runs, and nesting boxes you need to start with good plans that will help you avoid some of the common problems that new flock owners sometimes encounter.

Along with making sure the coop is big enough to house the number of hens that you want to have comfortably, you also need a plan that takes into account ways to keep your birds health, safe, and easy to maintain.

In considering the best health of your birds, there are several things you should take into consideration when building the hen house and coop:

1. How well does it protect from the elements? They should be built to keep the birds dry, have good airflow when it is hot, and insulated in the winter.

Good plans will include ways to protect your birds from the various predators such as dogs, foxes, raccoons, and weasels, as well as predatory birds such as hawks and owls. It also should have the chicken feed secured in a way that keeps it away from mice and rats. These really can put a hurting on your feed supply. Another feature of a good hen house plan will be that it is easy to keep clean and remove waste.

3. Is the coop built for optimal waste removal? This is something that can be laborious if it is not set up correctly. Having the hen house built so that it is adjacent to your compost pile and easy to remove is a definite plus as well as having a system in place to get rid of the ammonia.

Planning these things out ahead of time is a must to have a worry free and productive chicken hen house and to have healthy, happy chickens.
