Dog Behavior Issues – Jumping Up

September 1st, 2010 by KittyKitty

As you either know, or will know soon enough, leaping up on you or visitors generally is a problem. Extra of a nuisance than a problem actually however nonetheless a problem. What must you do? I usually use on of three techniques:

Technique1 – Ignore

The first is to simply ignore the dog. Turn your again and ignore him. No speaking, nothing. This isn’t what the canine wants. He craves your attention and you aren’t offering it when he jumps, simply flip your back on him again. When he’s calm and reserved, reward him and give him the attention he now deserves. Constructive reinforcement rather than unfavorable actions.

Technique2 – Use Your Knee

The first method shouldn’t be at all times profitable, so I present the second one: use your knee. Simply lift your knee as much as the dog and provides him just a little bump. This “bump” is just not very snug for the canine, so he should ultimately stop jumping on you. Once more when he’s calm and collected, praise. Use your ankle or instep as an alternative of your knee for small dog be careful not to kick him – you are attempting to discourage leaping, not educate the dog to be afraid of you!

Technique3 – Commanding the Sit/Keep

A third thing to try is to command your canine to take a seat/keep or down/stay if he’s trained to do so. Choose a selected spot where your pup ought to go when greeting visitors and have him go there when the doorbell rings. Follow this by having a buddy or your partner go outdoors and knock on the door. As quickly as he/she does, command your pup to go to his ’spot’. Your dog may not hearken to you if he’s in frenzy and may want some ‘assist’ to remember the command, so it is your job to help him ‘remember’ by guiding him into the proper position.
