For training Jack Russells, finding out how to stop a dog from chewing can be very important. Whether you are just starting to train your puppy or if you have been at it a while, you may be looking for some help.  Puppy training can be frustrating when tackled by yourself. Russells are adorable, high energy dogs and can be both a great companion and a first-class working dog. Russells originated in England in the early 19th century and were initially used to hunt red foxes. Not surprisingly, the Jack Russell is a very intelligent, energetic breed. Unfortunately, if Jack Russells are not given ample opportunity to exercise, they may exhibit destructive behaviors. Jack Russell obedience training can generally rectify the situation. For problems with dog chewing, dog training to stop chewing may also be necessary.

The best way for how to stop a dog from chewing is to determine the root cause of the behavior. Puppies are often unsure what they can and can’t chew on. Be clear about the difference and try basic obedience training for puppies. Basic training for puppies may not be sufficient if your Jack Russell Terrier’s dog chewing comes from reasons other than basic lack of obedience.

Another great way to stop puppy chewing problems is to make sure that your Jack Russell Terrier pup has plenty of toys to keep them occupied – especially while you are away from home. Keeping a Jack Russell busy can be a lot of work. You may also want to try some additional Jack Russell obedience training, but remember not to hit your dog. Physical punishment may cause an anxiety disorder in your puppy. For young dogs, teething can also cause dog chewing problems, as can loneliness, boredom and stress.
You can also try a bitter tasting “no chew” spray for your Jack Russell puppy. This is available in most pet stores and is non-toxic and can dissuade your dog from chewing things you’d rather it didn’t, (like shoes, that new iPod case, or your favorite t-shirt.)
