Perhaps your dog is bored or lonely?
A major cause of problem barking is a dog who feels anxious or lonely. Is your dog always left alone while you go to work? Make sure you are providing your dog with plenty of exercise to compensate for that, 1 – 1.5 hours per day depending on size and breed. A walk before or after work is highly recommended. Look around for a hired dog walker, if this is too difficult. Your dog will be much happier having received this attention. There are many dog toys available for you to try. Dogs love balls and perhaps you could even leave your dog a bone to chew on. Try rotating toys and your dog will think it has a new toy each time.
Spending too much time alone is a common cause of barking. Dogs are social beings in need of a lot of attention, interaction, and communication. Spend a lot of time with your dog playing and showing it affection. Dogs need this to thrive. Find activities that include your dog, when at home. Dogs who are loved are happy. Is it playtime for your dog?
Giving in to barking so that you will stop what you are doing and play, is the worst thing you could do. If you do give in you will reinfoce this bad habit. To effectively do this is by turning your back towards your dog; getting up, moving away and not responding at all. Your dog is not used to this and will be confused to begin with. Praise is the key and when your dog realises barking isn’t working, praise it. Let your dog know how pleased you are, with positive reinforcement. Being consistent is very important in all aspects of dog training. All pack animals of which dogs are one, need to know who is in charge. Your leadership is necessary for your dog to respect you and become well adjusted, well behaved and happy. A dog does not necessarily have to be quiet to be well behaved. Your dog will learn from your clear instruction about the right times to bark.
