What about invertebrates? Contrary to popular belief invertebrates are perfect for mini or micro-reef tanks. Many invertebrates prosper in non-reef tanks. For the novice aquarist the hardy species are best. Included in this are shrimps such as the cleaner shrimp, blood shrimp or peppermint shrimp and coral banded shrimp. As is the situation with saltwater aquarium fish, stick to the hardier shrimps to begin with.

Anemone crabs are another option you might try with your saltwater aquarium fish. And why not add some sea urchins and starfish that are quite well suited to beginners with a couple of month’s experience? They differ in size, shape and color and some are poisonous so be cautious! Sea urchins and starfish eat detritus and algae along with other small bits of food so they will help to keep the tank clean and your saltwater aquarium fish healthy.

Anemones aren’t actually suited for beginners. They need special lighting and top-notch water conditions so if you can’t foot the balance for the lights stay away or you’ll live to regret it. Invertebrates you need to avoid include tridacna clams, flame scallops, Octopi, Nudibranchs, or any hard or soft coral and sea squirts. Like the saltwater aquarium fish listed previously these invertebrates have particular feeding and living requirements.

If you select saltwater aquarium fish, you need to remember that they’re much more expensive than the freshwater varieties. Because of this you should make the extra effort with them and try to keep them alive. When fish are captured and moved from the store to your house they are liable to get stressed, especially since many of them have been taken from the ocean mere days ago. So make sure you can properly care for your friends prior to bringing them home!

The practice of keeping aquariums came about in the late 1800’s. They were fairly crude. These ancient aquariums only had one side that was made from glass, with all the other three sides being made of metal or wood. Most aquariums contained fish which were native to the location of their owner due to availability. Also most old school fish tanks contained only freshwater fish. This is because salt water would corrode the metal frame that kept the aquarium together. Nowadays people can even have the luxury of watching fish from the comfort of their own computer screen with these free moving screensavers!

Aquariums drastically changed in the 1960’s with the advent of silicone adhesive.  Metal frames became obsolete and more people began to keep salt water fish as well as invertebrates. More recently glass tanks have grown to be less often used due to the flexibility of acrylic. Acrylic fish tanks are much more forgiving than their glass counterparts. If a heavy object hits a glass tank, it will likely break. The flexibility of the acrylic tank prevents this catastrophe from happening. In addition, acrylic offers more flexibility in design than glass. Acrylic aquariums have been made into everything from coffee tables to gum ball machines.

That said, there’s a short downfall to having an acrylic fish tank. They actually scratch easier than glass. When cleaning your aquarium, take care not to use paper towels, and harsh or abrasive chemicals, as they can scratch the acrylic surface of the aquarium tank.  Always use a cleaner specifically labeled safe for acrylic. Use plastic or rubber scrubbers, instead of metal to clean the edges of an acrylic tank. Be careful not to accidentally pick up a piece of substrate or gravel while washing the inside of the tank. However, if you do happen to scratch an acrylic aquarium, all is not lost. The tank may be repaired, unlike glass. There are actually acrylic repair kits available at specialty pet stores, the local home improvement store and of course on the internet.

When choosing an acrylic aquarium kit, there will be a variety of options to select from, at many different price points. Aquarium kits can be purchased at places such as specialty aquatic pet stores, from huge retail stores, or again online. A fish enthusiast can choose from small cylinder shaped tanks that may also become a coffee table lamp to wall huge wall sized aquariums. While, there are some basic things that will be included in most aquarium kits, such as, a filter, some substrate or coral and sometimes lighting, the kits themselves can differ greatly.  It really does not matter where you purchase your starter kit, but remember that it is extremely important to buy your fish from a reputable dealer. Don’t buy fish which are hovering near the surface, or which are located in an aquarium with other dead fish. Fish diseases are incredibly communicable. Be weary of a fish dealer which will not catch a particular fish from the tank for you. After all this is going to be your fish and you have the right to select.
