Training The Older Dog

September 29th, 2009 by KittyKitty

Many people believe that when a dog moves past the stage of being a puppy that it is a little to late to train him. These beliefs are untrue. Sure, it may be true that training a pup might be a little easier, but training an older dog can sure be done.

Learn More Here

In most instances you will have a little knowledge about the dog going into the training process. In the instance that you have gotten your pet from a shelter or he just showed up at the house, you will not know much about his background. Therefore,if you know very little of your dogs past you will need to approach the training with a kind spirit.

Below you will find a few tips to help with your older dog and a few of these tips will prove useful in training a pup

Time To Relearn

You will need to be on guard for some of the unacceptable behaviors that the older dog has picked up prior to coming to live with you. Not only will you have a few things to teach him, you are going to have to un-teach him things. Just remember, up to this stage in his life, he does not know any better.

More Training Advice Here

Always be alert so that you will be able to stop the wrong behavior immediately.

It’s All In The Voice

A tool with a lot of impact will be a nice firm voice as you begin the teaching process, not yelling, just a firm tone. Try to never sound upset or angry, you want your dog to believe that you are in complete control. Any time he does something good, smother him with praise and give him a treat.

One Word Commands

Use commands with one word when training pups or dogs of any age. It is simpler for your pet to comprehend words like “stay”,”come”,enough,””down” than it is for him to understand “Go lay down,” “Stay right there” or “Won’t you please just sit down”

One Time

Once your dog has a basic understanding of a command, he needs to do whatever it is that you ask him the first time. You are not going to beg. Now this one is crucial. Let’s say you call your dog, he chooses not to come,Do Not repeat the command just walk over and get him,if he chooses to come to you, give him some treats and pets. When you use a command three or four times before taking action the your dog knows that the first command means absolutely nothing.

Rewards And Good Behavior

Here is one thing to be conscious of, rewarding your dog with treats and praise for a job well done will take you where you want to go much faster than punishing him for unacceptable behavior. Any time your dog follows a command that you have given him, shower him with attention and praise.

The right way to train your puppy or older dog is through the reinforcement of their good behavior.

Parish the thought that just because your dog is a little older that it will just be to complicated. If you use the right training methods and stick with it, it will seem like it didn’t take much time at all to have a trained older dog.

Training Your Dog With The Innotek Bark Collar

September 29th, 2009 by KittyKitty

People love their dogs, but unfortunately, their neighbors don’t love their barking as much. The Innotek Bark Collar can help stop barking at innaproppiate hours, like in the middle of the night.

Innotek is a company that produces dog collars, that are appropriate for any dog. There are collars for small dogs, medium dogs, or large dogs. Depending upon your preference, there are two basic types of collar. The most popular one is the one that has sound detectors on it and can sense the vibrations that your dog makes when it barks, and then delivers a small static shock.

The Innotek bark collar has a built in patented system that allows you to tune the intensity of the shock that it delivers, so that it works at a level that your dog is comfortable with. The collar has sevel levels of intensity, and it comes preset at the lowest one, so that the intensity can be increased until the dog stops barking. When this happens, the collar will set itself at that intensity and won’t go up anymore. There are other Innotek bark collars that have even wider range of levels.

By using the collar at the times when your dog is most likely to be a nuisance, you can soon train your dog not to bark – using the collar for more than half an hour or so a day is generally not recommended because a dog that is not allowed to bark at all can become neurotic.

There’s another kind of Innotek bark collar which uses a spraying device that is activated when the dog barks. The type that delivers the static shock is perfectly harmless, but some people object to them. The collars that produce a spray (usually a lemon/citrus smell) instead of a static shock work in the same way except the spray confuses the dog and stops the barking by encouraging the dog’s curiosity about where the smell came from.

Every Innotek bark collar comes with a small instruction manual that will teach you how to train your dog in a safe way that will eliminate excessive barking.

Synopsis: This is an introduction to Innotek bark collars. It talks a bit about the different types of Innotek collars available. The general conclusion is that these collars are very effective at what they do.

Understanding Dog Training Collars

September 29th, 2009 by KittyKitty

These days, training collars are more of a need than a luxury for dog owners who are responsible about their pets. Laws today penalize dog owners when their pets bark too much at night or growl or attack at people, and even just a carefree play can be mistaken for an attack by a surprised stranger. Dogs just follow their natural instincts, of course, and it takes some training to make it behave and keep itself and its owner out of danger and trouble. Thus, the increasing need for training collars of several types.

Choker Training Collars

Some people consider chokers to be the more humane dog training collars. They help when the dog pulls too hard on the leash and helps to correct other bad behavior too. These kinds of training collars can be used for daily walks with puppies and adolescent dogs as they are trained to socialize with people and other dogs. Dogs eventually learn not to pull too much on their leashes while they are out on a walk to avoid the choking sensation caused when they pull on the collars. Some training collars even have protrusions that dig softly into the dog’s neck when he or she pulls too much on the leash. As soon as the dog eases on the pressure, the protrusions also lay flat back unto its normal angle.

Electronic Dog Collars

These collars detect the vibrations caused by barking and in turn they deliver a small static shock. The collar fits around the neck of the dog and the device from which the small electric shock comes from is placed directly in front of the dog’s throat. The shock is not cruel, it’s just a mild static shock, similar to the one we get when we play with balloons. These collars work very well while the owner supervises the dog, and should be taken off the dog when not in training, to allow it to rest.

Dogs Get Sick: Ways To Identify Early

September 28th, 2009 by KittyKitty

This is a pretty open ended question and one that could easily fill volumes of text which we do not have. We are going to highlight some dog health symptoms that might prove to be helpful and hopefully enlightening and will prove to be useful as far as dog health advice to those of you that are new to pet ownership and might even shock some of you that have owned a dog your entire life.

So why do dogs get sick? Well for a good majority of them it happens because of two factors. If the family pooch is left out in inclement weather they are definitely more prove to getting sick. The second most common reason for a sick dog is by human error. Dogs are known for sniffing around and getting into things. It is what dogs do. That makes them very susceptible to becoming sick from ingesting something that they shouldn’t. Environmental poisons left by the people that are their masters. Things like household bleach or antifreeze left in the garage. All of these things can make dogs get sick at the very least and can cause a very painful and ugly death.

That equates to using the common sense that you have acquired over your lifetime.

While it is true that a dog can eat things that would normally make a human as sick as, well – a dog – it is still not a good idea. I have seen my neighbors give rancid meat to their pet. Food that could actually be smelled from a few yards away and smelled really bad. The dog ate it, later he seemed to have to poop more than normal but no other ill effects. But why take the chance of killing something that you love? My rule of thumb is that if it is human food that I would not eat myself, it hits the trash and not my dog.

Water is another thing that can cause illness. Dogs like to lap up water wherever they find it. However standing pools of water can hold lots of disease-ridden things. SO another good piece of dog health advice here would be to make sure that your pet has a good supply of fresh water to drink.

If you are going to be gone for some period of time and your puppy is an outdoor dog the least you can do is arrange for someone to feed and water him while you are gone, or even better – look into an automatic feeder and water dispenser to solve the problem and help keep him fed and healthy.

The Tips For Using An Electric Dog Training Collar

September 28th, 2009 by KittyKitty

New technological developments of modern times are constantly changing our life – now we can enjoy the benefits of using such technological advancements as wireless internet connection, 3G mobile communication, microwave cooking and many other technological improvements. And many people these days feel that Electric Dog Training Collar is one of these types of improvements.

Electric dog training collars are typically used for dogs that are particularly difficult to manage and most responsible owners are well aware of what a collar’s capabilities are. They are not used only by cruel owners; in fact, many owners use electric dog training collars because their dogs put themselves in danger – like running into the street – and the owner does not want them getting hurt.

Pluses and Minuses of Electric Dog Training Collar Usage

Just like with everything else in the world, the use of an electric dog training collar has both its benefits and its drawbacks. The cons include, of course, an increased degree in control over one’s pet. It is always good to be able to control your dog’s bad behaviors remotely, regardless of where you are. And today’s electric dog training collars have charges that are more static than electricity, meaning they are more humane.

As to the negative sides, some dog owners feel uncomfortable about using electric shocks to train and manage their pets. Although most collars have very low-level shocks some people just can’t bring themselves to buy one. Finally, a lot of dogs have negative response on training with an Electric Dog Training Collar and demonstrate better reaction to other ways of controlling their negative behaviors. In the end, it’s an owner’s responsibility to decide what will work and what methods they will employ to achieve there goals for them and their pet.

Come When Called – Dog Training Exercise

September 28th, 2009 by KittyKitty

One thing that every dog must do is come when called. This is for the dogs own good as well as the welfare of other pets and people. Dogs need to be taught this for their own good because they can run into danger, like a car or an untrained animal. Once a dog is trained to come when called, you can take him out in public places.

It is not hard training for dogs to learn how to come when called. Basically, you would give your dog special treats when it listens to you. Training should be enjoyable for both your pet and you.

Before you start this type of dog teach training, make sure the animal is going to react positively to the type of food you will give him. Show the food to the dog and let him smell it. If he likes it, you can start.

Use small size food when dog pet training. You do not want to feed the animal too much where he does not get motivated to want to more food. Chicken and cheese are good to use.

Many professional dog trainers want the dog owner to work with them when they train the dog. This is because the dog must not only listen to one person. They need to understand that they need to listen to anyone who is in charge of them. If someone in your family member wants to watch the dog, he will have a problem if your dog only listens to you. Have a friend or family member call the dog and then you do the same. Have your dog go back and forth, going from your friend to you. This is a great exercise. Stand approximately 30 feet away from each other in a safe place. You can call the dog and tell it to sit. Your friend can call the dog after you and then he can give the dog the treat. Every time the dog comes, give the dog a treat.

Try spreading out farther and farther away from each other. The dog will eventually have to look for you. It must search for you to get the food. This will teach your dog how to come when called.

Hire Cars Should be Free of Pet Debris

September 28th, 2009 by KittyKitty

Since when did car hire firms change their rules about pets in vehicles? I’ve just returned a hire car that my colleagues and I had used to get home from Heathrow, filthy with dog hair and smell.

Don’t get me wrong. I really love animals but I don’t like having their fur all over my business suits. My familiy has a small menagerie of a cat, dog, several fish and even a wild hedgehog in the garden. My family and I love animals. But when I tried to book a hire car for my family, dog and cat I was told that only certain vehicles were suitable and these weren’t available.

On further investigation I ultimately found a car hire firm that did accept pets but only in certain vehicles (estates) and the animals had to be secured behind the back seat. We were happy with this situation and understood completely.

You can probably understand how dissappointed I was by the hire car supplied by a well known car hire supplier at Heathrow. My colleagues and I had returned from Frankfurt late in the evening having pre-booked our hire car before we left Germany. We collected the details and keys from the desk and headed for the parking lot. When we opened the car door it smelled like Crufts dog show on a warm day. Not nice.

We were about to go back to the desk but one of our party was impatient to get home so we hopped into the stinky car and off we went. It wasn’t until I got home that I realized my suit was covered in what appeared to be white dog hairs.

Whoever had used that car immediately prior to us had clearly allowed a dog to roam freely on the seats and upholstery. When I got in touch with the car hire firm they apologised and told me that they don’t allow dogs or cats in their normal saloon cars so someone had broken their rules. Someone had clearly broken their rules and they hadn’t managed to get the car valeted before we took it away. The result was an expensive bill for having four business suits professionally cleaned.

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

In future we’ll be driving to the airport and using airport parking services rather than rely on smelly hire cars. Top tip: Always make certain that you have adequate travel insurance before you go anywhere.
