Tips For How To Care For And Groom A Yorkie Dog

May 31st, 2009 by KittyKitty

Yorkshire Terriers, or Yorkies, are unique little dogs with a look that’s all their own. These little lap dogs with long fur tend make great pets, both outgoing and affectionate, craving plenty of attention from their owner. These dogs are fiercely territorial, but can still be good with other pets and with older children. Dog trainer who know how to care for a Yorkie puppy will find that they have a beautiful little pet that gives love and devotion. Learning the basics of how to care for and groom a Yorkie puppy will prove useful.

Long, Long Fur

One of the interesting features of these dogs is that instead of a fur coat, their coat is much closer to hair, constantly growing, which means they can develop long hair styles. Knowing how to do Yorkie puppy training and its hair will prevent you from having a dog with ugly tangles. Because the hair is constantly growing, this breed will need frequent trims to prevent its coat from getting too long.

For those who want a dog with a short coat or want an easy time of learning how to care for a Yorkie puppy and its fur, simply have the groomer clip the fur short. A short clip will prevent the fur from getting too long for a while. However, if you’re planning to show your Yorkie at dog shows or want to keep it long, frequent brushing and clipping will be necessary. And of course, one thing to remember in learning how to care for a Yorkie puppy is that the long fur on top of its head traditionally is tied with a bow, creating a topknot.

Strong Personalities

For such a little dog, Yorkies have very strong, willful personalities, and you should take this into account when learning how to care for a Yorkie puppy. Because they do have such strong personalities, these dogs will respond best to dog training with firmness. However, since they also love attention, this gives you an easy way to work with the dog, since attention and praise when they do respond to attention will be helpful.

On the other hand, since they hate to be ignored, the worst thing you can do when learning how to care for a Yorkie puppy is to ignore it. Dogs such as these will develop terrible personalities and more aggressive behavior if ignored, so take care to give your Yorkie plenty of attention. Those that do will find that they have a little dog that's great to have around.

Ways to Stop Dog Aggression

Ways to Stop Dog Aggression

There are many reasons that a dog might become aggressive toward other dogs. Some dogs might be fearful around other dogs.  In other cases the dog is striving to be the dominant dog.  In other cases, the dog is becoming aggressive since he is defending his territory. The dog can also be taught to be aggressive by it’s master rather than being socialized to the other dogs. Some dogs may also be protective of their owners and thus become aggressive and sometimes become sexually aggressive also.

Tips

One way to stop dog aggression is to make sure that a dog is socialized as a puppy to other animals.  Puppies should be allowed to play with other dogs that are mature and well behaved.  In this way, they learn the proper dog behavior from the older animals.  The puppy earns that other dogs are okay and that he does not have to fight to defend the territory or protect the owner from the other animals.

Another way to stop dog aggression when a dog starts to become aggressive is to address the issue immediately each time it happens. The dog should not be allowed to get away from this type of dangerous behavior.A head collar or muzzle can be effective while the dog is in training to stop dog aggression, but is not the solution to the problem.

A way to stop dog aggression is through strict training so that the dog is gets used to the instructions of its master rather than focusing on the other animal. The dog should be trained to focus on the owner so that his attention is there and the owner can give a different command to the dog, such as ‘down’ or ’sit’ while there is another dog around. The owner should also teach himself to control his feelings and behavior, as small as it might be, so that the dog does not take a nervous cue from the owner. This can also help to stop dog aggression since the dog always learns from the owner.  Once the dog has been trained to focus, the dog can also be distracted by being trained to look for a treat when there is another dog around. The treat can be thrown to the ground and the dog can be told to find it, thus distracting the dog from other dogs and stop the dog aggression before it starts.

Pet Supplies Plus

You’ll be so glad that you found this site, you must be a good person for wanting to make sure you pet’s eyes are in top-notch shape.Always remember to put your pet’s sunglasses on whenever you are wearing yours.  You know that it’s not good for them.  So if you think about it, your dog should also be wearing sunglasses for pets.  He has eyes too that should be protected just like yours.  Most dogs at first will probably keep pawing at them.  It’s not that they annoy him, it’s just something new to him and with time, he will accept them.  And, I know that you love your dog.

I have a Scottie and she wears her sunglasses when we are outdoors.  When we go to the park, the kids all love to see her with them on.When she has them on, kids laugh when they see her in the park.I’m glad to see that the mothers at the park have taken their children’s eye care more seriously by having them wear sunglasses while out playing.  We had all just never thought about how much the bright sun damages your eyes without a good pair of sunglasses on to protect them.

What a great day we had at the pet plaza learning all about why dark lenses are a must for protecting the eyes of your pet.  I talked to his daddy about where he bought them to fit so well.  He gave me this terrific online site that he bought his dog’s sunglasses.  If you would like to go there, please just follow this and it will take to there.  When you get to my site, just go to the search button at the top in the middle and put in the search box “sunglasses”.If you want to see some wonderful sunglasses for pets and humans, it will show you there, also.  Make sure you click on the “Doggles” button.  They are a brand of sunglasses, top of the line, but a little bit expensive.Whatever you do while out of the house, choosing Doogles will always be right for your pet and whatever activity you choose.

Maybe you and your dog go boating on the weekends.Sunglasses for pets and an orange vest are both great rules to follow for protecting all pets.  Since they come in a variety of colors and sizes, I hope you would also consider having him wear them.  I have a pink pair of “Doggles” for Kisa with the hot pink lenses.  Since she is a Scottish terrier, she wears the medium size.  And with her black coat, the pink are great looking on her.During warmer months, we are on the water so much of the time.

During the winter time when we have a lot of snow, she wears them outside when we are sledding with the kids down the hills in our neighborhood.  A couple of other neighbors have gotten their dogs some, but one got the black with the smoke lenses.Tippy is a french poodle that is the standard breed and the large size doggles are a great fit. The other dog, Shadow, is an older Labrador and she wears the large sunglasses, but they got the blue with the blue lenses for her.  You’ll be able to see all that is available, including the interchangeable lenses when you go to my site to look at them.

I hope this has helped for you and your dog’s needs and why sunglasses for pets are so important.  Thank you for stopping by.There are so many pet accessories that are purchasable for animals, it is mind-boggling.  Now go play fetch outside with your most trusted friend and have some fun!

Pet Rabbits and Kids

May 29th, 2009 by KittyKitty

Parents will often get a rabbit specifically as a pet for their child.  Your child looks at you with those big eyes and says “please” and the rabbit comes home.  But rabbits are unlike cats or dogs and don’t react the same way to child behavior.

Rabbits have abilities that evolved in the species over thousands of years. They’re quick, have sharp claws and teeth, and an flight response that propelss them to flee at the first sign of danger.  But those very aids to the rabbit can be harmful to the child.

When a rabbit feels threatened it may bite. Rabbit teeth and jaws are powerful enough to cause a very nasty wound to a child. Teach the child to stay alert, not to startle the rabbit, and keep its hands and arms away from teeth.  Both parties will be happier, and so will you.

Rabbits have powerful hind legs.  When possible they’ll use them to run away at top speed.  When they can’t flee, they’ll fight.  But the claws on their hind feet, even trimmed, can rip a nasty gash in a child’s hand, arm or face.  To reduce the odds, teach the child not to stress or startle the rabbit.  Approach slowly, don’t hold the rabbit when it squirms, and never yell or squeal in its presence.  Those ears are large for a purpose!

Kids will need to be instructed how and when to hold a rabbit (and how and when not to).  Rabbits rarely enjoy being held firmly, and then only for short periods.Rabbits often enjoy human company, sitting beside someone and being gently stroked.Usually, though, it is best to stay away from the ears which are a natural magnet for children.  The rabbit uses those for survival and interfering with them will sometimes produce stress.

Rabbits can see almost 360 degrees around.  An eye is located on each side of the head giving them a wide angle of view.  But because of the placement, they have a blind spot about 10 degrees wide just below the chin. The rabbit adjusts for the lack of depth perception we have from stereoscopic vision by moving its head.  They judge the distance of objects by parallax (the two different views gained from two different angles).

Teaching a child about the way a rabbit sees and hears helps them understand how the rabbit approaches the world.  That makes it much easier to explain why some things are safe and others are potentially harmful or stressful to the rabbit.

But beyond physical safety for both the rabbit and the youngster, there are many helpful lessons to learn.

Rabbits can be trained to perform a number of amusing behaviors.Helping the child to do that, involving it in the training, benefits both the child and the rabbit.  The rabbit perceives the child as a companion and the child learns to develop skills that apply to many situations:  patience, gentleness, careful observation and so on.

How Good Is a Wireless Fence At Stopping My Dog From Escaping?

May 29th, 2009 by KittyKitty

The good news is that the answer is yes – a wireless fence really does work! If you are a dog owner and has a dog that likes to escape from the confinement of your back yard, then you understand the problems of keeping him within the boundary of your home. What are the alternative options to a wireless fence, they are to chain your dog up all the time or have a new fence errected

There are a couple of different types of wireless fence, you can get one for inside your house and one for the yard. Click here to read about how a wireless fence works.

Both the PetSafe and Innotek wireless fence takes into account the temperament of your dog when training it to stay within the boundary of your yard. Should your pet dog get to close to the fence the collar will deliver a light static correction. The first correction will deter many pets but some will keep going. For this reason, the PetSafe wireless fence has six levels of static shock. Therefore if the first level has no effect, you can increase the setting to level two. The levels can be adjusted up to and including level six.

Because of this feature, the invisible dog fence will handle all dog characters from the mild to the stubborn. Dogs are extremely intelligent and learn very fast, they soon realize that when they get to close to boundary flags, they will get a static shock from the wireless fence.

The wireless fence is based on proven dog training methods. The three principles of dog training are timing, consistency and negative correction. The first rule is time or timing, as soon as your dog crosses the boundary it needs an instant response. Your dog must receive a negative correction every time it tries to cross the boundary, this re-enforces the training and will shorten the training time, the negative motivation then ensures your dog is paying attention puts him off from crossing the line.

A bitch trains her pups by nibbling their neck should they do anything to displease her. The static correction works the same way; it nips your dog’s neck when it tries to cross the boundary of the wireless fence.

You should also be aware that in very few cases a wireless fence may not work for your dog. This very unlikely but it can happen. In this unlikely situation what recourse do you have? The answer is to purchase your wireless fence from a reputable supplier. Ideally, you should do your homework and find an online store that will give you a 60 day money back guaranteed and a full warranty on parts for life.

To learn more about how a wireless fence works or about who the reputable suppliers are then visit wireless fence. Check out http://www.squidoo.com/Wireless-Fence.

You can also consider building a small pond indoor or outdoor whatever gives you the convenience.

You should however consider that Koi need to be exposed to sunlight for few hours everyday. The best times will be in the morning and in the afternoon. Koi skin can be burnt by direct sunlight at noon so they must be provided with safety abode. Your outdoor pond should be away from trees to prevent the pond from being damaged by the growing roots as the trees grow.

Placing a net above the pond can also provide protection against the falling debris from the trees. You may find delight of giving your koi both an indoor and outdoor pond but creating one should be properly conceptualized in terms of safety, accessibility and ideal environment.

When building the pond you will be needing pond liners. You can use PVC but a butyl rubber liner is recommended because of its strength. Concrete has the lowest or the cheapest building cost while fiberglass is recommended when you want to have a pond for an indistinct lifetime.

You have to make sure that it would be better to construct a pond with vertical walls for smaller ponds to boost balanced arrangement of water temperature. You should also consider providing protection of your koi from outside predators by creating a higher wall on the pond.

crowded.

The aerator will supply air to the water and will keep the stagnant water continuously moving. The aerator will be providing the fish with oxygen. The pump on the other hand moves the water through the filter and the aerator. These are basic preparation when conceptualizing the ideal koi pond for your favorite fish.

The construction of the pond will have some significant factors to be considered in order to perfectly fit with your own design.

Basically, Koi are hardy kind of fish with special requirements to be satisfied. Koi ponds are very complex structures to construct and need special attention to details in their construction. Every Koi enthusiast has their own design of what Koi pond they want.  Regardless of ideas, Koi ponds must be properly planned, designed and constructed based on your requirements and specifications. Koi enthusiasts are recommended with following simple guidelines in Koi pond construction.

The first element to consider is pond size and shape.  Initially, most new Koi enthusiasts want to have a large pond. Large ponds are beauties to behold but these are difficult and costly to maintain for a newbie in Koi breeding. As a general rule, build only the pond that you can afford.

Try to expand your pond to a larger one once you have already materialized your initial plans and learnt new things about Koi breeding. The shape of your pond will depend on your aesthetic design and preference. You can give any shape to the pond you can define – circular, rectangular, hexagonal, etc…

The pond size and shape will also affect the number of fish to be bread in the pond. An ideal pond must be able to carry 1500 gallons of water which will allow for fish growth.  The preferable pond dimension is 9 feet long, 8 feet wide and a minimum depth of 4 feet 6 inches. Koi usually grow big and healthy in larger ponds.

After determining the size and shape of the pond, the location of your Koi pond must be chosen properly.  Important considerations should be made in choosing the spot for your pond. Koi needs proper lighting and shading to protect it from direct sunlight and harsh weather conditions. The accessibility and availability of utilities near your pond is important to supply the needed water and electrical requirements. The Koi pond construction must be away from trees with large roots and falling leaves.  The pond should also be protected from stray animals which can prey on your Koi.

Filtration is another factor to be considered in building your pond.  During the planning stage of constructing your pond, your filtration system should have been determined based on the size of the pond and the number of Koi to be raised.  A miscalculated system will result in poor filtration which will then require frequent and labor-intensive cleaning of the filters.  This will also result in to more expenses for additional filter equipment. At worst it might result into massive fish kill due to non-elimination of waste products and harmful compounds in the pond.

Koi pond construction is not an easy task to do. But the rewards of a well-constructed Koi pond based on careful planning and implementation are immense.

Terriers: A Perfect Addition To Your Family

May 28th, 2009 by KittyKitty

Terriers are a very loving and energetic breed that demand a great deal of attention from their family members. They love to make noise and most enjoy being a typical “lap dog.” Terrier training can be a bit difficult if you aren’t persistent, therefore you’ll need to be prepared to be firm and corrective with your terrier pup. If your interest is in breeding terriers, you should do plenty of research and speak to a vet to ensure that you are prepared for the responsibility. This article lists a few of the responsibilities you can expect when raising a terrier.

In order to be a great dog owner, you need to carefully pay attention to your relationship. Caring for the dog won’t be hard as long as you know your responsibilities of caring for them. That means bathing, taking them to the vet and feeding them. Some have different coat styles, and require more grooming than others. Training may be more difficult with some. For instance, Boston terrier training may be a bit more difficult than other terriers as they can tend to be hard to housebreak. The feeding for your dogs can vary depending on what type of breed you have. With the terrier breeds, you have both small and large dogs that need different amounts of servings of foods.

The type of food you feed your terrier is very important. If you’re able to, find out from the dog’s previous owner what type of food they were feeding him. If you can help it, try to keep the dog on the same brand of food, as this can prevent a possible upset stomach, diarrhea, etc. If you can’t find out what food the dog was previously eating, just do your bed to sort through various brands, taking care to read the nutrition label.

One of the very first things you should do if you get your terrier as a puppy, is to get his vaccinations administered as soon as he is old enough. This is ideally done between 9 – 18 weeks of age. The older the puppy becomes, the more likely his body is to develop an immunity. After your puppy has had the initial injections and booster, you should generally follow up with a yearly booster shot and check up.

Caring for a terrier will be like any other dog, but they will be a bit more energetic and need play time. Playing with them everyday will help them grow on you and listen a lot better, resulting in a calm pet you need. There are many places in which you can obtain your terrier, including pet shops, breeders, and even the classified ads section of your newspaper. You can also do an Internet search, such as “Westie puppies for sale” which will display the sites of many breeders or rescue organizations in which you can contact.

What Do As a New Dog Owner?

May 28th, 2009 by KittyKitty

Buying your first dog brings along a lot of responsibilities and duties as well. You have made a vow to teach your canine obedience and take care of it. You are going to have to potty train and teach your dog how to be polite. You will need to properly care for your dog as well.pet stylists will groom and primp your dog so that you don’t have to. The vet should be a regular contact from this point on. Also, when you take vacations for extended periods of time, you will need to enlist|look into enlisting} your dog into dog daycare. If you don’t, you gamble with the chance of coming home to smelly carpets and garbage across your floor.

The first thing you want to fix is the issue of jumping on people. If you fail to do so, your dog will put a damper on your social life. You wont be able to have parties none the less game night because your dog will berate your guests. One way to do this is stomp on top of the dogs back paw when it jumps up. This teaches the dog that jumping leads to negative reinforcement. Another way to fix this issue is to turn your back towards the dog when it jumps. Dogs act like children, a lot of what they do is for reaction. If you simply ignore the dog when it jumps, it won’t have motivation for jumping.

Another issue that needs to be nipped in the bud early on is yard training your dog.If you live in a house where you are going to want to let your dog outside, you will have to find a way to keep the dog in. Electric fences are one of the most common ways to train them. The first step is putting up flags when the fence will be, in order to show the dog where the fence will be. The purpose of the electric fence isn’t to shock the dogs, but to teach them boundaries. Hopefully the flags will show your dog where to avoid before it learns the hard way.

Make sure to become a regular visitor to the vet as well. You and your dog should be able to spend many years together and regular doctor visits will keep this possibility alive. A dog who visits the vet frequently will be able to maintain a low weight, healthy organs and bone strength. In addition, if you were to get into a pet emergency, you would be more prepared. The vet will know the dogs and its health issues.

Being a pet owner is a huge commitment. You are responsible for teaching it to be polite. Also, house training is essential while it is young. Also, keep your dog in close relations with your vet. If you don’t do this, you will have issues with your dog for years to come. If you take the steps to train your dog in the present, you will benefit form it in the future. If your dog is happy and healthy than you to will be happy and healthy.
