Recently I’ve had people ask me why I am promoting the Frontline and Advantix, etc. anti-tick products when I don’t use them on my own dogs. Well, there are a couple of reasons.

First, my dogs don’t seem to need them. We check our dogs every day for ticks, and only occasionally find one burrowed into the dog’s skin; when we do, we just pull it out.  Our dogs are very involved in our family life and we are always touching their coats, so we can easily find anything that shouldn’t be there.  I am also lucky because all of our dogs have short hair. It is obviously easier to spot and/or feel a tick when you don’t have to sift through a thick coat. Finally, and in my experience the most important reason, is that we are not afraid to take the ticks off the dogs.  As a groomer, I’ve found that  75 percent of people are afraid to yank a tick out of their dog, cat, child, whatever.  For this reason alone, many people use tick medicine. (As a side note, I am going to make some instructional videos on nail clipping,etc… and one of these videos will be “how to take a tick off.”)
My reluctance to use chemicals on animals is this: If I am supposed to put gloves on before I apply it to my pet, why is it OK to be applied to my pet’s skin, where it is absorbed into his/her body..( It works by its active ingredient, fipronil. Fipronil is absorbed through your pet’s skin and into its oil glands. This allows Frontline to be released to your pet’s hair follicles and skin every time the oil glands are activated.)   Just on principle this does not sound safe to me, so, since I don’t have to use it, I don’t.

That said, I totally understand why some people do use the tick products.  If your dog is going out and getting 20 ticks a day and depositing some in your house, on your kids , and in your bed, your dog needs something to deter the ticks. The last thing you want is a tick infestation.  Also, obviously, it is not good for the dog and the humans to be exposed to ticks and the diseases that they can carry. Lyme disease can be transmitted to humans and dogs, as can Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever, Ehrlichiosis, and Basesiosis.  The results of having these diseases can be quite devastating, so ticks are not pests to be taken lightly.

I guess it is up to each pet owner to balance the benefits and the risks of using preventive tick/flea chemicals.

Excessive barking is the plague of dog owners everywhere. It is perfectly normal for a dog to bark when it encounters different situations, certain breeds more than others. It is extremely sad and one of the main reasons that alot of dogs get left along at animal shelters.

It is imperative that yelling at and punishing your dog is avoided for its barking behavior. This can be very confusing for them. You must be consistent. You must distract and reprimand in the same way each time your dog decided to start barking when it shouldn’t be.

Praise them when they play with their toy instead of barking, in a light and excited tone of voice. As it is genetically implanted for your dog to want to please you they will begin to understand what is required of them and keep quiet in anticipation of making you happy. Repetition is the key, as with all training. Treat and reprimand enough times so that your dog gets what is expected of it.

Do your children like animals? This activity is part pet care, part science lesson, and all fun! You can get eggs, take care of them for a few weeks, watch them hatch into adorable baby birds, then return them so they can live out their lives on a farm. If you live in Southern California, there’s a store in Orange that makes this easy to do.

Wagon Train Feed & Tack in Orange sells chicken, duck and quail eggs and rents out incubators. You bring the eggs home, keep them warm in the incubator, turn them over regularly, and in a few weeks little beaks will start breaking through the shells. Enjoy the baby birds for a couple of days and then bring them to back to Wagon Train.

It’s pretty affordable for such a great experience.  The incubator rental costs $25. Eggs cost between $12 & $30 a dozen depending on the type. If you’re going to do this regularly (maybe you’re a teacher?) it might be worth it to buy an incubator. Eggs are available year round.

Don’t forget about the older kids. I always imagine this kind of activity taking place in a Kindergarten classroom, but older kids enjoy it too. And they actually understand more than the younger kids. You might have to answer tougher questions, though!

Have you hesitated to get a pet?  Don’t have enough space, or it’s too big of a time commitment?Hatching eggs takes place indoors and the whole thing only lasts a few weeks, so this could be the ideal way to expose your kids to animals.  Or you could offer to organize this for your child’s classroom.  Kids always benefit from animal-centered activities.

As a Koi pond owner, your priority should be to keep your pond in good condition. Remember that prevention is always better than cure: so once your pond starts to have some problems, it'll take more time and money to fix these.

No overfeeding:

Overfeeding your pets can cause damage to your water quality. Your fish wouldn't nearly eat the amount of food that they do in a controlled environment. Feeding them with too much food will promote larger amount of wastes in your pond. What you should do is to vacuum the bottom out as much as you can, and ensure that the drainage systems are clear and properly working.

Keeping the water quality:

Your pond needs filter. There are two kinds of filtration system. The mechanical filtration is the one that relieves the pond of wastes, insects and dead algae (which is important to sustain your pond's size and the number and size of your fish). The biological filtration is the one that provides the nitrogen cycle, which will remove all of those dissolved wastes from your pond (this, ammonia will build up which can be devastating to your pets).

You should always keep your pond clean all the time so that your pets will always live a beautiful and a stress free life. The water in your pond is where they will eat and sleep, that's why it's very necessary to keep it as clean as possible. The pond's water should be almost completely clear. There should be no debris, and your fish should appear like they're floating in the air. Also, you should be able to see clearly the bottom of your pond.

There are a lot of supplies that you need to properly maintain your pond, and many of these items are very necessary. It is important for you to know each item's function in order to understand as to why they are needed. There are also items that you need to have on hand always. As you have an outdoor pond, you should expect emergency situations to occur. It's known that nature is very unpredictable, so don't get caught in a situation where an item is needed and you have no access to get it!

Preventing those common diseases:

If you have a newly-bought fish, it is very important to quarantine them from your current fish population. Do this for no less than 15 days. Knowing that KHV (or Koi Herpes Virus) is activated within temperatures at 74 degrees Fahrenheit will let you expose your pet to the right conditions for the disease to reveal itself. Those that live in these conditions for a longer period of time and don't have any of the symptoms will show that they are unlikely to contract the illness.

In quarantining your fish, completely isolate it away from the current fish population that you have. Separate the tools, water and food that you use in taking care of the new Koi. Proper hand washing procedures should always be observed in handling both Koi and Koi items used within the same period of time. Remember that quarantining will greatly reduce the chances of exposing your fish to diseases and viruses.
