Specially designed Small Dog Costumes for your dog

March 30th, 2009 by KittyKitty

This weekend I wanted to go for a movie and I decided to book the tickets for the movie which associated to a dog’ life. My husband was upset as he did not want to watch this movie. Anyhow I succeeded in convincing him and finally we moved to the theater for the movie. His first reaction was still very doubtful. He just asked me, “Don’t you think this movie must be an over-sentimental kiddies’ flick?” Firstly, the movie showed no symbol of being a dog’s movie. I was surprised but then step by step the movie was full of sheer love and puppy-like devotion. The story was in fact based on a man’s life that had a pet which was none other than a dog, and the man’s life was full of joy and contented family life. Then unexpectedly his family met with an unfortunate mishap and all the family members were no-more. He was left behind alone in the family along with his dog. The man was in sadness for a longer period of time and then the doctors suggested his friends that he needs some change. During this course it was showed how his dog cared for this man. The dog unconditionally looked after his master and would not leave him unaided even for a second. My husband was indeed stirred by the dog’s behavior and was astonished that how these animals give in return even if the masters are incapable to give them any love in this condition . These animals are always faithful and it was proved in this movie. The main plan of the movie was that the director of the movie was trying to show that people who have dogs as pets in their house know the reaction, but people who do not have dogs at home can think of adopting these muffled animals as their pets and feel the affection of their love.

After seeing this movie my husband also thought of adopting a dog as a pet and he wanted to give the puppy the utmost care and love . He was so excited that the day he bought the puppy home, he wanted to celebrate it and declared that this day would be his birthday henceforth. When we surfed to one of the leading websites of the town, we found that there are several Small dog costumes in the market for the dogs. The entire Small Dog Costumes were beautifully designed and we decided that we will place and order for the Strawberries & Hearts Pajamas for our puppy. The material used for the Strawberries Pajamas was pure cotton and it was designed with different but sweet messages mixed with straw berries and little hearts. There were so many Small dog clothing that one can easily get confused to which one to buy because each of the Designer Dog Clothing is not only fabulously and stylishly designed but also were affordable.

Moving Quotes: Get it Before Relocating with Animals

March 30th, 2009 by KittyKitty

I love pets and I have always had pets. I had some large dogs and horses when I was younger. But when I went away to college I could not take my pets with me. I had to leave them at home. I missed them each day. So, I found some new pets at the nearby pet store. I looked around and found a hamster and bird that I really liked. I bought them and we walked home to my apartment.

While in college I moved around several times and had to move my pets. One of these moves was several thousand of miles way. Since I had done shorter moves with my pets, I thought this would not be much different. However, I had underestimated the issues involved with moving pets several thousands of miles away. As much as I wanted to I would not be able to move the pets myself as I needed to be away during the move. Life gets hectic sometimes and I could not get the schedules to line up that would allow me to drive my pets to our new location.

I called the movers and got free moving quotes. Then I arranged for my vehicle, my furniture and other things to be moved. In talking with them I mentioned that I have some pets that needed to be moved as well. They told me that the moving quotes did not include pets. This lead to an interesting discussion on how were my pets going to be moved. They did not move pets. They suggested I find some other company to move my pets.

So, I called around and checked with my friends, the pet store and a veterinarian. They gave me some suggestions about people and companies that would move my pets for me. This was encouraging as I had no idea as to how my pets were going to be moved.

I called a company that specializes in moving pets. I requested that they send me some quotes for long distance moving of my pets. They sent me a form that had many questions about my pets and what type of care, food, and exercise they needed during the move. After filling out the form and returning it, they sent me the long distance moving quote for moving my pets.

After reading about the special care they would provide and items that I did not think about, I felt confident that my pets would be properly moved. They were very nice and my pets survived the move. I was excited to see them at the other end of the move. Now if I could only get my schedule to work out so that I can survive as well as they did.

Moving Services: Easy Street Moving with Pets

March 29th, 2009 by KittyKitty

While I spent so much time being concerned with what effect the relocation from one home to another had on my kids, I did not think about what this day would mean for the family pet. I made sure that everything was packed and ready to go for everyone, including the dog. I did not think about the chance that her belongings would smell like the local moving services truck or that her bowls were at the bottom of the box that we would unpack last. Finally, I never thought about what would come of the fact that her twice daily walks would be in a different place with new smells and things to discover.

Dog’s, like kids, can become restless in a vehicle and want to know, “are we there yet?” In the car, it’s great to have all of the things that you would pack for a child, for your dog. I wish I had thought of this prior to relocation day! That way, Chloe would have been able to chew and play with her toy rather than gnawing on a picture frame. Also, we had to stop often to get water for Chloe. We forgot the portable water bowl and had to make stops frequently for water and let her drink slowly from a plastic cup. This only exacerbated the “are we there yet?” situation. I cannot imagine what this would have been like if we were relocating out of state and what the long distance moving services drivers would have thought about all of those stops!

When we got to the new house to settle in, set up each person’s sleeping area, including Chloe’s. Rather than getting in and going to sleep, she circled it in suspicion and kind of growled. We did not realize for a couple of days as we were settling in that the old Chloe smell of the bed had been replaced with that of the moving truck which had been used, according to the relocation services, to transport some cats to their new owner’s home. We were lucky that we had our washer and dryer installed so that we could wash it. Chloe circled it and reluctantly laid down on it, deciding that clean smell was at least better than cat/moving van smell. Within a few days, no one could tell the bed had not always smelled like a sweaty dog.

On relocation day, our dog had her first walk in the new neighborhood. At first, she did not want to leave the new home. She did not want to go because she did not know where she was. But, as the time passed, she found all of these new things to sniff and new places to mark. Those were some very long walks at first, as she felt she had to mark everything she saw.

As for the bowls that were packed at the bottom of the last box? Since we couldn’t find them, we had to purchase new bowls. Come to think of it, I don’t think we ever did find them.

How To Treat A Sick Goldfish

March 29th, 2009 by PetGuru

Early diagnosis of disease is an important part of the overall goldfish care. If you can’t readily identify a goldfish disease see your local vet, or pet store.

Fish live by absorbing oxygen and they give off carbon dioxide as a waste product. Plants under the influence of daylight do the opposite so that what is poison to one gives life to the other. So adding plants to your aquarium will assist in keeping your goldfish healthy and disease free.

Prevention is always easier than cure, so by keeping your aquarium clean, feeding your fish properly, avoiding wide temperature fluctuations and performing partial water changes as necessary you will go a long way to keeping your fish healthy. However, no matter how well you maintain your tank, from time to time one or more of your goldfish may become stressed or ill.

Some of the more common goldfish diseases are discussed in this article.

Anchor worms appear as a 1/4 to 3/8 inch piece of string with a forked tail. Large anchor worms can easily be seen. They appear as clear, greenish-white or brownish-red strings. Once the anchor worms have buried themselves into the flesh of the fish open sores may appear on the skin. Anchor worms may be visible in the sores. Frequently this parasite is introduced into the fish tank from aquarium plants, especially those taken from rivers or creek, or from adding live food to the tank. Anchor worms attach beneath the fish’s scales and bury their anchor-shaped head under the skin causing ulceration and distress to the fish.

Anchor worms are highly contagious and must be treated immediately. Your local pet store can supply an appropriate treatment for anchor worm, usually in the form of a gyrase inhibitor that can be added to the tank water. This should be effective in killing the parasites in three or four days.

Swimbladder disease should be suspected whenever a fish appears to have difficulty stabilizing itself in the tank. It is fairly common in goldfish although fancy varieties appear more susceptible to the disease. It can be genetic in origin or caused by a variety of other factors including inadequate or improper diet, bacterial infection or even poor quality aquarium water.

Apart from improving the water condition if that is necessary, some fish keepers suggest feeding your goldfish thawed frozen peas. It is also worth feeding the fish with sinking food instead of floating food to minimize the intake of air. It may also be worthwhile moving your sick goldfish to a smaller shallow tank while you treat it. This may reduce the stress on the fish. Swimbladder disease often occurs quite suddenly in previously healthy fish.

Dropsy isn’t a specific goldfish disease, but appears as a condition where the fish’s abdomen becomes swollen due to a concentration of fluids in the body tissues or cavities. The abdominal swelling can create a pinecone effect where the fishís scales protrude from the body. The cause of the swelling could be any of several conditions including cancer, internal parasites or bacterial infection, cancer, internal parasites. Depending on the source of the condition dropsy may be contagious. There are no known successful treatments for dropsy and the condition usually proves fatal.

Torn or frayed fins are usually indications of fin or tail rot if the fish has not been fighting. This is a bacterial infection that first presents as a whitish edge on the fins, before the fins begin to rot away. It is easily treated with antibiotics available from your pet store. Make sure that the medication states that it treats fin or tail rot. In some cases a secondary fungal infection can occur. In this case, treat the fin rot before dealing with the fungal problem.

Fungus is usually a secondary infection. A fish with an open wound or sore caused from injury or disease may suffer from a lack of mucous around the area of the wound. Open wounds like this can often attract a secondary fungus infection. Look for patches of white or grey fuzzy puffs attached to the skin. There are several treatments available for fungal infections from the pet store. Fungus responds well to quick treatment.

Perhaps the most common goldfish parasitic disease is ick. It is frequently present in freshwater fish tanks and will infect fish that have suffered recent infection or those in poor general health. Ick is characterized by small white dots that look like salt sprinkled on the body. The fish may try to scratch the infected areas on the wall of the tank which can cause further damage. Rapid breathing and cloudy eyes can also be signs of ick. See your pet store for ick treatment. Badly infected fish should be moved to a hospital or quarantine tank for treatment but it is important to also treat the main aquarium, ensuring that the parasite has been removed.

Goldfish are quite hardy fish but there are still many diseases that can cause them discomfort or stress. If you want your goldfish to live a long and healthy life you need to make sure that you manage the aquarium properly and treat sick goldfish as soon as symptoms appear.

There is a comprehensive and instantly downloadable e-book covering the entire topic of treating goldfish diseases.

Chicken Coop – How to Build a Chicken Coop

March 29th, 2009 by PetGuru

So you’re thinking about taking care of chickens, and now you need to build a chicken coop. Here’s some quick tips to consider:

* You need to have a good design for the coop. Consider how many chickens you are going to be caring for, and design appropriately. Make sure it’s not going to be something your neighbors will complain about.

* Use material that is easy to clean. Plain wood often absorbs water, and therefore will be more difficult to clean in the long run. Using some sort of plastic might be a better alternative.

* You need to make it so the water will drain out. If you clean the coop regularly (and you should), you’re going to need to make the coop be able to drain out water. This means sloping the floor slightly towards the door.

* Make the coop is protected from the elements and predators, but still have air flow. Having the appropriate screening around windows, as well as fans can do just that.

* Chickens need to be kept warm and dry, so it’s important to insulate the walls of the coop. This will help to prevent air drafts from getting your chickens sick.

* In addition to insulation, having the windows facing south can help to maximize sunlight into the coop, therefore allowing maximum warmth.

Building a chicken coop is easy once you have a good plan to follow and you take into consideration various minor elements. This will help you to take care of your chickens better.

Although chicken care may seem like a daunting task, it really isn’t, especially when you have a complete guide to chicken care. The more information you have on chicken care, the better off you will be in having happy, healthy chickens

6 Types Of Small Dogs – Part 2

March 29th, 2009 by PetGuru

Part 2 of this article on small dog breeds looks at small dogs in the herding, terrier, non-sporting, and toy groups.

Terrier Dogs

Terriers were bred to hunt – rats, foxes, rabbits, and even otters, river rats, and badgers. These days, almost all terriers are bred as pets. And with their loyal and affectionate temperament, they make great pets. It’s wise to remember, however, that they are dogs with strong personalities, and they need equally strong and determined owners. This is just as true for the small, toy terriers – their personalities are just the same as their larger terrier cousins. Terriers also have a lot of energy, so will need their exercise. They have wiry coats, and to keep the characteristic wiriness of their coats you’ll need to do a special grooming technique called stripping.

If you’re after a small dog, you’re spoilt for choice in the terrier group. The small dog breeds are: the Border Terrier, Australian Terrier, West Highland White Terrier, Manchester Terrier, Irish Terrier, Kerry Blue Terrier, Norwich Terrier and Norfolk Terrier, Dandie Dinmont Terrier, Smooth Fox Terrier, Welsh Terrier, Cairn Terrier, Bedlington Terrier dog breed, Scottish Terrier and Sealyham Terrier.

Toy Dogs

Toy dogs are a very recognizable small dog type, due to their popularity with both people and celebrities. There are actually toy dogs in some of the other dog groups as well. Many large dogs have in fact been bred down to toy dog size.

Toy dogs are friendly, though they can be fierce and angry as well. But they are great lap dogs, and often a cherished member of the family. Toy dogs include: Italian Greyhound, Chinese Crested, Pug Dog Breed,Pug Dog Breed, Italian Greyhound, Chinese Crested, and the Pomeranian dog breed.

Non-Sporting Dogs

Non-sporting dogs is a general term for those breeds the American Kennel Club recognizes, that don’t fall into any of the other categories. They have varying colors, ancestry, coats, sizes, and temperaments. Small breeds in this category include: the bichon frise, Tibetan Spaniel, Tibetan Terrier, Boston Terrier, French Bulldog, Schipperke, and the Lhasa Apso.

Herding Dogs

Herding dogs are a relatively new classification in the AKC. The breeds in this category were part of the working group. In fact, in many breed registrars in other countries they still are a sub-catgory of the working group. In the American Kennel Club, most dogs in this group are kept as pets, although working (and herding) dogs are still used worldwide on farms, cattle stations, and ranches because of their abilities to herd livestock. They can be trained to respond to specific commands and whistles, and perform a variety of herding related tasks particularly well. In families as pets, herding dogs may try and good naturedly herd their human family, particularly the kids.

In the herding group, the small dog breeds are the Shetland Sheepdog, Pembroke Welsh Corgi, Border Collie,  and the Cardigan Welsh Corgi.

Miscellaneous Dogs

This category is for dog breeds not fully accredited by AKC. There aren’t any small dogs in it currently, however.

6 Classes Of Small Dogs – Part 1

March 29th, 2009 by PetGuru

Learning about the types of small dogs can help narrow down the selection process for a new dog. The American Kennel Club (AKC), the main registrar of breeds within the United States, divides dog breeds into 7 categories, plus the miscellaneous class. The latter is for breeds that have not yet completed all their registration requirements.

The seven categories of AKC recognized dog breeds are:

  •  sporting
  •  hound
  •  working
  •  terrier
  •  toy
  •  non-sporting
  •  herding

You’ll find most small dog breeds are in the toy class, but there are also a lot in the terrier class, and some in the non-sporting, sporting, hound, and herding groups. There are no American Kennel Club recognized small dogs in the working class.

What Do These Groups Mean?

The dogs in most groups share some defining common characteristics. Some are classified due to particular skills like a great hunting or herding ability, (in the herding and hound groups). Others are there because of their size (toy dogs), or ancestry (terriers). The sporting and working dogs are a bit like the medley racers in Olympic swimming – they are all-rounders, either at doggy sports, or excelling in the various skills needed for working dogs. The non-sporting group are more dissimilar than similar however. The exception being that they don’t fit well in any other category.

Types Of Small Dog Breeds

Sporting Dogs

Sporting dogs excel at hunting, although they make excellent pets with the right owners. Sporting dogs were bred to hunt all types of small game, including birds, and they can hunt either on land or in the water. This group covers twenty-seven breeds, including the English cocker spaniel dog breed, a type of small spaniel. Other breeds in this category are setters, pointers, other spaniels, and retrievers. Sporting dogs are very alert, and need a lot of exercise and/or mental stimulation.

Hound Dogs

Hound dogs are also hunters. Hunting dogs classified here have been helping humans in the hunt historically. In doing so, they were bred to take advantage of particular skills each breed had. Some hounds use speed, others sight or smell, to find their prey. There are 23 breeds in this group, which includes three small breeds – the whippet, basenji, and dachshund.

Working Dogs

Dogs classified as working dogs can be pets, but they are called working dogs because they provide some function for people, whether that’s herding livestock, as a guide dog or a police dog.

The AKC uses this broad definition a little bit differently. It puts breeds in the working dog category when they have been bred to perform a task which cannot be accurately categorized in one of the other existing classifications. There are no small dog breeds in this category.

Don’t worry about your dog while you’re on holiday, take him with you!

March 29th, 2009 by PetGuru

Going away on holiday can often be a bit of a nightmare for families with a dog. You’ve found the perfect destination for your ideal holiday but before you can go anywhere you have to work out who will be able to look after your pet while you’re away, and how you will be sure that he is going to be ok without you around. You could try and get a friend to look after him, but it’s a pretty big ask, especially if you’re going to be away for more than a few days. The other alternative is to find a pet-sitter or boarding facility but it’s difficult to know which ones to trust and you know you’ll only end up spending your holiday worrying about whether he is happy and being properly cared for.

There has got to be a better alternative. Pets are part of the family after all, and it doesn’t seem fair that they should be left behind while the rest of you are off on holiday. Luckily for dog owners, more and more holiday companies are realising this and are starting to offer pet friendly accommodation at only a small extra cost. OK, so you can’t take them on a plane to the other side of the world, but if you’re planning a holiday a bit closer to home it’s worth considering taking them with you – you wouldn’t have to worry about them being left behind and it’s usually cheaper than paying a pet-sitter or kennel to care for them.

Wales is a great place to choose for a family holiday with a dog. Not only is there a huge range of different types of self catering accommodation, from flats and houses in the town to rural holiday cottages, Wales also boasts some of the most stunning scenery in the UK. And honestly, what dog wouldn’t love the chance to run around in the famous Welsh hills and valleys, or along one of the beautiful coastlines with their long sandy beaches and striking cliff faces.

It’s not just your dog who will love Wales, there is wealth of attractions and activity holidays for the rest of the family, not to mention the chance to explore a country that is not only beautiful but rich in history, culture and entertainment. So if you’re looking for the perfect destination to take the whole family – including the dog – for a short break, Wales could be the answer you’ve been looking for.
