The easiest way to find a good Pug to adopt is going to the Internet site Petfinder.com. This is the most comprehensive list of pets for adoption in America. Most breeds of dogs have breed rescues, but do not have a website that lists all of the rescues for that breed in the country. Pugs, however, are an exception. They do have a list called PugRescue.com, which also includes Canadian Pug rescue groups.

Although there are excellent Pug rescue groups that have websites, there are some things you can do to prevent being taken in by a scam pretending to be an animal shelter. First of all, never pay for a dog you have never met. Don’t be taken in by cute photos – they can be faked. And never fall for a “pay ahead” scam, where you can get a free Pug puppy after you send the transportation fees to this overseas untraceable bank. Often, dog rescue groups will charge a non-refundable fee for filling out an application form, but it is a small charge or less than thirty dollars.
A legitimate Pug rescue group will never do or offer any of the following. They won’t offer puppies year round. They usually never have puppies at all! They also will never offer to ship the dog anywhere. You usually have to provide all transportation yourself. And they will have you fill out a long application form and then set up an interview with you rather than having you fill out an order form to be filled. Most importantly, a good Pug rescue centre will never have you pay all of the adoption fees before you meet the Pug.

You can find links to good Pug rescue centres from Petfinder.com or PugRescue.com. Both of these sites contain two of the most comprehensive lists of Pug breed rescues in America and Canada. Because dog rescues are made up of volunteers, there is no parent organization that governs them or makes them have to put up a website at all.
Remember ever to lay any money down for a Pug that you’ve never met. This way you can avoid scams and other potential heartbreaks. You will be expected to provide your own transportation both to and from the Pug rescue centre. You should also be able to visit the Pug rescue centre or foster home where you can not only see your potential Pug, but also see under what circumstances he or she is living in.

Most Pug rescue centres are a network of foster homes and not one central building. Get to know about Pugs in general before you visit. They often are a noisy breed and naturally chunky. If you not aware of how a healthy Pug behaves, looks or sounds, it will seem that all of the Pugs are quite ill when they are acting normally. All Pug rescue centres charge adoption fees of a few hundred dollars, so expect that. Anyone giving away Pugs for free doesn’t care where the Pugs will wind up.

You are considering adopting a Beagle, but wonder what are the pros and cons of the breed. Information from breeders and the American Kennel Club (AKC) tend to gloss over any potential problems with your new dog, while highlighting the breed’s strong points. You need to know what the most common Beagle behavior problems are before you bring one home.

Compared to some breeds, the worst Beagle behavior problems are more annoying than anything else. Some, like wandering, can be easily prevented through regular exercise, supervision when outside and neutering. Beagles, as well as other dogs, have only recently moved indoors with people. It’s only natural that there are still some Beagle training pains to go through. A lot of Beagles are given up to shelters; sadly, because their owners would not take the time to learn about Beagle nutrition, exercise requirements or personality.
The most common Beagle behavior problem is wandering. Beagles have been known to ignore the invisible fences that keep in most dogs and still set off to explore. This is due to Beagle genes. Beagles were bred for fox hunting – in fact they are miniaturized versions of the English Foxhound. This means they are bred to run around for miles and miles every day.

You don’t need to look up in any dog training book to know what the prevention of wandering is. You need to take away your Beagle’s reasons for wandering off in the first place. Neutering is essential here, especially before the dog is two years old. You also need to give your Beagle regular daily exercise of playtime and at least a half hour walk every day. Remember – a tired Beagle is a good Beagle! Even if you have a fence, you should still keep an eye on your Beagle. They are escape artists.
Wandering and separation anxiety can be dealt partially with proper nutrition and exercise. Your new mantra is “A tired Beagle is a good Beagle”. Too rich a diet will make your Beagle bounce off of the walls. And Beagles worship food, so they will easily overeat. Proper exercise also makes your dog more prone to nap when you are gone instead of tear a room apart in separation anxiety.

The good news about Beagle problem behaviors is that many other breeds of dog also have them. You can pick up any dog training book and know that the techniques inside will apply to Beagles. Be sure an annual check up is part of your Beagle’s life, as this can help prevent medical conditions that may cause Beagle behavioral problems. For example, if your Beagle suddenly snarls when you pat him, perhaps he has arthritis and can’t help being grouchy. Your vet can be of great help with any and all Beagle behavior problems.

Rottweilers are victims of their own success. Rottweilers are such impressive dogs that many people want one just to be fashionable, or because they think a Rottweiler would be cheaper than buying a home security system. Rottweilers are big, powerful dogs that often do not know their own strength. They are very good with children, but often not so good with adults. They need regular exercise in order to burn up their natural exuberance.

In this way, most Rottweilers and Rottweiler mixes that wind up in Rottweiler rescues or your local animal shelter arrive through no fault of their own. Rottweilers have also been abandoned just because they somehow physically do not measure up to the breed standard. Some are abandoned because they have health problems prone to big dogs like hip dysplasia that the previous owners could not be bothered to pay vet bills for. Very, very rarely do Rottweilers enter shelters or rescues because of being vicious.
There are many ways to find a good, reputable Rottweiler rescue. You could ask your vet, your local Rottweiler breeder or your local animal shelters if there are any Rottweiler rescues in your area or your state. You could also check the classified of Rottweiler periodicals, or even all-breed dog magazines, which often have advertisements for Rottweiler rescues. You might even check out a dog show to see if you can find any Rottweiler rescues. These are all great ways to learn a lot about dogs, especially Rottweilers.

But the fastest way of finding a Rottweiler rescue is online. If you go to a website called “Rottweiler Rescue Groups Nationwide” there is a comprehensive list of Rottweiler rescues in America. Keep in mind that there is no oversight organization for any animal rescue center, including Rottweiler rescues. However, they all must be non-profit organizations that can show you their registered charity number.
You should never be allowed to immediately take or “reserve” a dog to be shipped to your home from legitimate Rottweiler rescue groups. If you come across a website claiming they are a Rottweiler rescue, with puppies available for a price with no questions asked, then this is just a front for a puppy mill or for a dog thief. It should take at least two weeks from you filling out an initial adoption application to bringing home a Rottweiler.

You will be vetted and have more background checks done on you than when you applied for a mortgage. This is a sign of an excellent Rottweiler rescue. They will check your home, that you are not in trouble with the police for animal cruelty charges, and often need a letter of reference from your veterinarian before you can even meet a prospective Rottweiler for adoption. A good Rottweiler rescue will also let you call them long after the adoption for Rottweiler information on training and behavior tips.

National Rottweiler rescue groups save hundreds of dog lives every year. Searching the Internet is another way to get good Rottweiler information.

If you know anything at all about the current pet overpopulation crisis in the country, then you are already planning to adopt a homeless animal rather than buy from a pet store or a breeder. You already know that incredible pets can often be found at animal shelters and breed specific rescue centers. By doing your homework and learning all you can about different dog breeds, you have enough German Shepherd information to know if a German Shepherd is right for you and your family.

German Shepherds, although incredibly popular, also are abandoned in incredible numbers. Most people are not aware of the needs this intelligent, active (and shedding) breed has before they bring one home. They might want a German Shepherd just because of the looks, or to have as a status symbol. Unlike their owners, volunteers at German Shepherd rescues across the nation get to know the dogs in their care.
Good German Shelter rescues will work very closely with each dog in their care and take time to get to know the dog’s preferences and quirks. Good German Shepherd rescues will never let you adopt a dog right away. You could also contact the American Kennel Club (AKC), which would get you into contact with the breed club. But many German Shepherd rescues are small operations run out of people’s homes, so they might not advertise.

They usually have websites, though. Petfinder.com is quickly becoming the most comprehensive resource on the web for matching homeless animals with those people looking to adopt. First, you will talk on the phone or via e-mail, and then you will fill out a lot of paperwork. If all goes well, then you meet the dog the German Shepherd rescue think best will match up with you. Be patient with them in finding you a furry friend. There’s no point in adopting a German Shepherd only to have to put him or her back into a shelter.

Any good breeder will tell you that a new dog, regardless of the breed, is going to experience its fair share of problems. Chihuahuas are no different and Chihuahua problems can be caused by genetics as well as behavior and are usually a reaction to the environment around them. You should do some research into the varied types of problems you may encounter with a Chihuahua, as knowing in advance what the problems may be may help you from making a mistake.

If you are thinking about getting a cute little Chihuahua for your kids then you may want to think again. Kids like to run and create havoc through noise and rapid movements. These are all things that make a Chihuahua very nervous and can cause your Chihuahua to be stressed out. One of the reactions a stressed out Chihuahua has is to start biting and that is not good. Plus the fragile Chihuahua may not be able to survive a rambunctious child’s treatment.
Everyone loves the little Chihuahua and finding a Chihuahua to take home is usually pretty easy. But you should be very careful with breeders that try and sell you Chihuahuas weighing less than four pounds for an extremely high price. This is a common Chihuahua problem where the shady dealer will try and sell what seems like a trendy little dog to an unsuspecting owner. Everyone thinks it is cute except the Chihuahua, to them it is serious business. If this sort of behavior is not taken care of immediately it can lead to uncontrolled barking and potentially escalating to the point of your dog biting at everyone it sees.
In all honesty one of the biggest Chihuahua problems that any owner will encounter is the difficulty in housebreaking a Chihuahua. There is no one set way a Chihuahua will act. Some are aggressive while some are passive and some are obedient while others just won’t listen. You are just going to have to spend a lot of time with your Chihuahua to figure out what kind of dog you have and then alter your training habits from there. Japan is well-known for cutting edge innovations that often go unnoticed by the Western world. But Sharp Corporation’s press release on 27 August 2008 cannot be ignored! Incorporated in its ionic air purifier, the Plasmacluster Ion Technology (more on this in a later post) has just been scientifically proven to be 99.9% effective in destroying the bird flu virus known as H5N1.

Every now and then, the press reminds us that bird flu is the prime suspect to cause mankind’s next pandemic. Pandemic does not just sound terrifying. It is. That’s when a deadly virus turns totally global, in a very negative sense. It boggles my mind that the 1918 Spanish Flu may have killed 50 million people on earth! World Health Organization (WHO) confirmed on 5 October 2005 that the 1918 Spanish flu was caused by H1N1, a bird flu virus.

Now that I have your attention, is it time to PANIC?

Not now. The H5N1 virus was identified in China in 1996. Up to 10 Sep 2008, WHO data puts the death toll at 245, a “relatively small number” statistically. So what’s the fuss? Scientists monitoring the virus fear that it may mutate into a form that transmits from human to human. As of today, there has been only one probable case of human-to-human transmission recorded in Thailand in September 2004. If indeed the much-feared virus mutation takes place, you can expect pandemonium on a global scale.

With increasing momentum. many countries are conscientiously preparing for the worse (more on this in a later post). At the individual level, we should start making preparations too.

Ok, so what’s all this got to do with Sharp’s ionic air purifier. Is it not just another ordinary ionic air purifier? At US$399, the Sharp model compares favourably against a typical competitor’s ionic air purifier that may cost US$160 upfront but over 5 years cost a total of US$560 due to annual filter replacement costs of US$100 each.

Since I have only started on this study, I would greatly appreciate any feedback on the numbers quoted by Sharp. Just email me if you have actual numbers.

Meanwhile, I’m going to scrutinise intently the Sharp Plasmacluster Ion Technology. Especially since bird flu is still not quite at pandemic proportions.

Today is the day to get started. Believe me, I have seen it. Imagine thousands of frantic people going from drugstore to drugstore looking for the same face mask. The N95 mask was touted as the only effective weapon as a near-pandemic scare gripped Asia. SARS! Four letters that struck terror in Asia. The SARS (severe acute respiratory syndrome) virus started spreading from Asia, infected 8,096 people around the world, resulting in 774 fatalities. As always, being prepared is half the battle won.

Buying a cat- what you need to know.

So,you’ve decided that you want to have a pet cat. However, before you shop for your kitten, you may need to consider a few important things. After all, finding out that a cat is not for you after you’ve already grown attached can be heart breaking.

The main reason that people have to find their cats new homes is that they are allergic to cats. If you’ve never spent much time around cats, be sure you can spend a few hours in a home with cats without developing an allergy attack. Also, check with friends and family to be sure none of them are highly allergic.

Next, you may want to consider your lifestyle. Although most different cat breeds need less interaction than dogs, your cat can still become lonely and bored if left alone all day. A bored cat is often a bad cat. If you work long hours, consider getting two kittens so that they can keep each other company.  

Don’t forget to take a look at your home and be sure you can fit in a cat and all of his accessories. Cats need litter boxes, food dishes, toys, and a scratching post. If you have children, the litter box will need to be placed in a place that your children can’t get to, but that your cat can access easily.

Once you decide that a cat will fit into your household, you will need to decide whether you want a kitten or an older cat. Most people take one look at that cute, fluffy kitten and fall in love. Since kittens have not developed bad habits, a kitten is the perfect choice for people who have time to litter box train their new pet. Most kittens have not yet been altered or declawed and must receive a series of immunizations to protect them from infectious cat diseases. Older cats are a good choice for people who want a slightly less energetic pet and do not have time to train their cats to use the litter box. Most older pet cats have already been altered and will only need to take booster vaccinations.

Now that you know whether you want a cat or a kitten, you will need to find out where to buy your new cat. If you just want a great pet and aren’t concerned with owning a specific cat  breed, the best place to look is your local humane society or animal rescue. These organizations are usually overrun with healthy, sweet cats and kittens. If you are looking for a specific cat breed instead, a cat show can be a wonderful resource. Many exhibitors bring along a few kittens that are for sale. Even if you can’t find kittens of the breed you are looking for at the show, you can ask exhibitors to place you on a waiting list for one of their kittens.  

Once you bring your new pet home, don’t be surprised if your cat takes several days to settle in. To help your cat adjust quickly, be sure you have a bed, litter box, and food dishes set up in a permanent spot.

But when a dog disobeys your commands it is mostly because the dog didn’t get what exactly you want him to do. That means, you need to find better ways of training.
It is often found that people hit the dogs nose with magazines or newspaper every time the dog acts naughty. This is completely wrong. In fact this could counter productive. Your pet might have accidentally made a mistake and if you punish him for something which is not his mistake, then the dog will not be motivated to follow your instructions. Another common mistake performed by the dog owners is that, they shout at the pet. This will confuse your pet. Are you screaming because you are happy or are you screaming because you are angry? Be firm in your tone, but do not shout. I am sure everyone who dealt with children knows how to be firm in their commands yet friendly. This holds true for puppy potty training as well.

Stop Barking..
Some times you will find that your dog is unnecessarily barking. Before you run to your favorite pet shop to buy a barking collar, please understand that a dog can bark due to various reasons. Saltwater Aquarium setup: Choosing the right tank

There are some factors involved when choosing the type of saltwater aquarium setup. Some major factors include what type of species do you want to stock, how much space do you have available, what is your spending power? Buying the largest saltwater aquarium setup you can afford which will fit within the environment you have chosen to use should be your first goal.

The first priority is to the comfort of your saltwater fish and any other species as they grow in your aquarium. The invertebrates and fish which will be in your tank require room to swim and grow but also need an environment where there is plenty of oxygen in order to survive. To determine this we look at the tank size. You can give your fish a great chance with the right saltwater aquarium setup.

One important aspect of your saltwater aquarium setup is oxygen. The surface area of your tank is the major contributing factor to the amount of oxygen it holds. The surface area on top of the tank which is exposed to the atmosphere above is what we are talking about. As oxygen transfers to your saltwater aquarium from the surface of the tank the greater that area is means there is more chance of oxygen transferring from the air into the water.

As well as taking in oxygen a large surface area for your saltwater aquarium also allows toxic gases like carbon dioxide to escape. The more this process is allowed the healthier your aquarium will be. Another factor which determines the amount of oxygen in the water is temperature. The cooler the water the higher the oxygen content will be in general.

With warmer water tropical fish with temperatures above 75 degrees less oxygen is available. This is why it is most important to have a larger surface area for your saltwater aquarium or else you may have to stock smaller or less marine animals. Therefore the larger aquarium you can keep the better it is for your saltwater fish.

Determining your requirements needs thought as saltwater aquariums come in all shapes and sizes? It is not the size or volume of the tank which determines its surface area but the shape. Because of its shape a tank can have less surface area even though it holds a larger volume. Tall and narrow aquariums will not have the ideal area for the gas cycle. The exchange of gas will be much better in a short wide tank.

With this in mind and your aquarium tank chosen, its time to move on to the inhabitants. Like we mentioned depending on the size of the tank will determine the amount of inhabitants you can keep in comfort. One of the worst problems with a saltwater aquarium setup for beginners is overcrowding the tank. Your aquarium relies on an efficient filtration system and too many inhabitants will overload it. Stressed fish living in cramped conditions is on of the major causes of fish death, diseases and illness.

You should start slowly when stocking up with fish. Only a small amount should be introduced in one go. First calculate how many gallons of water your aquarium holds. For the first six months introduce fish at one inch per fish for every four gallons of water. A sixty gallon saltwater aquarium setup would therefore have 15 fish. More fish can be added after six months at an increase of two gallons for every inch of fish.

A 60 gallon tank example would be:-

Two 1-inch clownfish
One 1-inch Beau Gregory’s
Two 3-inch queen angel
Two 1- inch gobies
Two 1-inch blennies
One 2-inch Tang (surgeonfish)

Or any variables of these with your own favourite choices. Then you can increase your fish to 30 after the six month period.

You may have to adjust the amount of fish you keep in you tank because when they grow they will require more space. Not only fish size but shape is also an Issue. Less fish is needed in an aquarium with heavier stock.

Development of your saltwater aquarium takes time and is not an instant product. They are not cheap to buy and maintain so do not cut corners. It does not matter how much time and effort you put into your tank eventually you will have problems that need solving. with a bit of thought getting the right aquarium from the start is better than having to change it because you choose wrongly. Think before you buy, a small tank at the beginning is probably not the best idea. Wait until you can afford at least a 30 gallon tank or bigger before investing in your saltwater aquarium.
