Clearing Up Cloudy Aquarium Water

August 19th, 2008 by PetGuru

Having an aquarium full of tropical fish is a great pastime and it is a great addition to any home. However, once in a while you will have murky aquarium water. There are several reasons why one would have cloudy aquarium water in their tank. One of the best ways to clear up this murky water is to understand why it is murky. Knowing the reason will help one clear up the cloudy aquarium water.

The Forecast Calls For Cloudy Aquarium Water

There are several reasons why an aquarium would get murky water. When this happens, one has to look trimly at the cloudy water to determine the cause of it. If the water is a green cloud, this means that there is too much algae in the tank. This usually occurs because of overfeed and overuse of the light. To eliminate the green cloud, one should clean the gravel and filter more often, then lower the amount of food the fish is given on a day by day basis and turn off the light for awhile.

White tinted murky aquarium water indicates the growth of bacteria in the tank. This can occur when you first set up the tank, or when you add new fish or decorations. The greatest way to clean this type of cloud is to filter the gravel frequently, rinse the decorations and change the filter. The white murky aquarium water should clear up shortly.

Adding The Additives

If none of the above suggestions work, then you can go to the local pet store and buy a special additive that you can add to the water to clear up the cloudy aquarium water. Sometimes these chemicals work, and other times they don’t. It all depends on what is making your water murky. If you do not removed the source of the cloudiness from the water the murky aquarium water will merely return over and over again. Therefore, make sure you know what is causing your cloudy aquarium water before deciding to add the additives.

Understand what is making your aquarium water cloudy is the first step in understanding how to clean it up. If you try these steps and the cloudiness still doesn’t clear up, you may want to seek advice from a fish expert at your local pet store. Cloudiness may not be reckless to your fish in the beginning. However, if it is left untreated it could possible grow into a fatal problem.

Add Personality To Your Aquarium With Snails

Have you ever seen the giant aquarium at the Forum Shops at Caesar’s Palace in Las Vegas? Go deep into the mall past the Red Piano gift shop, past the Coliseum where Elton John, Celine Dion, Bette Midler and Cher perform. Keep going, past the slot machines, the blackjack tables and the poker room.

Deep under the ground, where the interior lights grow dim, you will start to notice a spectacular, enormous aquarium. Thousands of vivid fish draw the eye. And if you look very meticulously on the floor of the aquarium, or perhaps climbing on one of the rocks or walls, you will see the aquarium snails, working their way through the environment, cleaning up dead plants and animals as they go.

Spot The Snail

Playing spot the snail is a fun game whenever you visit a home or mall where there is an aquarium, like at Caesar’s Palace. Snails like to stash, so they many times over place themselves in the shadows or behind rocks. Their shells provide camouflage, making them even harder to spot than ever.

The head of the snail is easy to spot because of its two eyebrow-like tentacles. The tentacles can extend and retreat, and the eyes are located at the base of each one. Snails have tongues that they use to eat the dead matter that forms the basis of their diet.

Gilled Aquarium Snails Prosobranchs

The softhearted of snail most generally found in an aquarium is a gilled snail. These snails reproduce publicly, and they will concisely populate an empty aquarium. Snails with gills are hermaphroditic, which makes it easy for them to reproduce. Some species of aquarium snail change sex to reproduce; others fertilize their own eggs, and other cross-fertilize. Gelatin commoners filled with eggs lie under submerged rocks and plants until they hatch.

Red ramshorn aquarium snails are also widely found. Red shells are the most highly desired. Brown ones aren’t rare at all.

Population Control

Overpopulation of aquarium snails can be a problem. Snails are good when they are keeping the aquarium gravel clean, but they can soon overpopulate and become a problem in the aquarium.

The easiest way to keep the tank free of unwanted aquarium snails is to use Botias, also known as loaches. These fish will feast on the gilled snails, and your overpopulation problem will before long be over. If you have other fish, don’t give in to the temptation use water dogs to clear out snails. The water dogs will eat the fish in no time.

Life-Like Living With Aquarium Plants

August 19th, 2008 by PetGuru

When it comes to a home aquarium, most owners focus on the fish. Whether it is a salt-water or fresh-water tank, the fish succinctly become the pride and joy. Trips to the store to select a new vibrant friend, research on which fish can and can’t live together, fish food and filtration and all of the other required life-sustaining aquarium products. One way to really liven up your tank is through the addition of some aquarium plants. Sure, they may be green and rather stringy, more like seaweed than any refined outdoor flower. They may even give the appearance of dirtying the water. Many owners focused on the loveliness of their fish overlook the plants. But in the end, the fish rely on aquarium plants as much as they rely on food and a lovely, healthful aquarium tank requires a good variety of life-giving plants.

A Plant For Every Need

Live plants help to ensure the proper balance of water, chemicals and elements in any aquarium tank. A properly chosen, planted and cared for variety of plants beautifies the aquarium, increases the health of the fish and even gives joy to the owner. Selecting aquarium plants and arranging them can be as enjoyable as purchasing new fish. Plants come in a variety of shapes, textures and sizes, and while there are limits based on the size of the tank and the pre-existing plants, most owners can greatly experiment with aquarium plants and discover the perfect arrangement.

But in the end, aquarium plants exist foremost for the fish not the owners. Happy fish are fish that feel at home, and in an aquarium only plants are going to give the appearance of nature. Plants help the aquarium mimic the ocean floor and they help filter light and filter water, giving fish places to hide and helping them to believe they’re swimming through the various ocean levels. Aquarium plants also provide natural filtration, as they eliminate the need for many fish care products and external chemicals, as well as pH adjustments and ammonia absorption resins.

Oxygenators specifically are some of the most important aquarium plants. Growing absolutely under water, these plants release oxygen directly into the water. They also offer numerous other benefits such as helping to balance the chemistry of the water by softening it, and help to maintain proper pH balance, a necessary helpfulness for the survival of fish. Elodea is one of the most desirable oxygenating aquarium plants. Dark green leaves, arranged around a narrow stem, help to indicate the quality of the water in the tank. The leaves will become covered in calcium deposits if the water is too hard.

August 19th, 2008 by PetGuru

Choosing Driftwood

Aquarium driftwood is not for saltwater tanks or for reptiles. If you try to use it in a reptile tank, it could harm your pet.

You can easily find aquarium driftwood at your local pet store. As long as they sell aquarium supplies, they’ll usually sell aquarium driftwood. The next thing you will have to think about is the shape of aquarium driftwood that you want to buy. Driftwood comes in all shapes and sizes. What you need to consider when choosing driftwood is the size of the tank and the size of your fish. If you have smaller fish, you can buy a piece of driftwood with holes in it so they can swim through or stash if they feel like it. You can also get aquarium driftwood without holes for larger fish to swim around.

Other shapes that driftwood can come in are as skinny as branches to as thick as petite logs. It all depends on how you require to decorate your tank. Make sure that if you choose a large piece that you will limit other plants and decorations. Overcrowding a tank with a lot of decorations won’t make for happy fish. Make sure you fish will have enough room to swim, hide and be happy.

Warning

If you want to get aquarium driftwood, make sure you purchase it from a store that sells if specifically for fish tanks and aquariums. These pieces are treated with chemicals that will make it withstand your tank. Do not ever use real driftwood that you find outdoors for your fish tank. This kind of driftwood will rot in your tank and could be harmful for your fish.

If you think that your tank will benefit from a great piece of aquarium driftwood, check out your local pet dealer to find great pieces of the driftwood that are not only functional, but charming as well.

You just saw this add in the paper, ?Small Dogs for Sale? and your curiosity has been whetted. Only yesterday you were bemoaning the lack of a warm body to come home to, and were even thinking of going down to your pet store to find a suitable warm body.

Ideally a small dog was what you needed as your flat wasn?t all that big, You did have access to a small garden but that was hardly enough for you to stand in let alone to let a large dog roam loose. A small dog would have to do, but you had no idea what kind of breed you wanted. You only knew with certainty that you didn?t want a Chihuahua. They gave you the creeps. Neither did you want a Bassett hound gracing you flat, it would just be too depressing to watch its big eyes staring heartrendingly into your face.

So you?re left now with not a clue as to what you want in your mythical small dog, but all ready and raring to go and see what type of small dog was meant by the small dogs for sale ad that you saw.

You rush down to the address mentioned in the classifieds page and wait in eager anticipation as someone comes to answer the door bell. You ask about the small dogs for sale ad and wait eagerly for their answer. You?re given a smile and then invited around the side of the house to the garage. Here you find yourself confronted by a handful of playfully gamboling puppies. They?re definitely not Chihuahuas but you don?t know what they are, and neither does their owner, who points helplessly at their mother who is a small dog of indeterminate and mixed breed.

You settle on buying one immediately as you don?t see a problem with the puppies and you quite like the look of the mother who looks kind of cute in a mixed up sort of way. The hardest part of course comes when you need to choose from amongst the litter. Looking into their cute faces you wish that you could take them all home with you but you really only need one. One little fellow attaches himself to your leg and declares that he belongs to you and that?s basically it. No mess no fuss.

That should of course have been a forewarning of course. Ever since you answered that small dogs for sale ad, and bought the little guy home, you haven?t been left with one intact pair of shoes, slippers, or even jeans! Now you?ve resorted to keeping all of your clothing at least six feet off the ground.

If you own a dog or a cat, or if you?re the proud owner of any type of pet, then you know the importance of taking your pet for regular check ups. Your vet can also help you with the many questions that you have regarding pet care and pet health. But what

August 18th, 2008 by

Naturally they can?t diagnose any illness or conditions that your pet might be suffering from, but they can help you in a surprisingly different manner. For one thing with an online vet at your disposal you won?t need to be forever rushing around trying to find out everything you need to know about your pet and what type of pet care is bet for them.

With the online vet you can get your information straight from the horse?s mouth so to speak, and you can also be assured of getting the right information. Not something that you could only guess at. Your online vet can answer your questions in detail and tell you all about why something should be done this way and not the way you thought it should be done.

You?ll be able to get great grooming tips, and can find out what type of foods your pet is supposed to eat. Your online vet can also tell you why chocolate is so toxic to dogs, cats, and birds alike. And if you?re interested in becoming a vet yourself, you?ll also be able to find the information that you need to start the process.

That?s not all however, there are a host of things that you can learn from an online vet if you want to. You?ll also have the benefit of talking with other people and sharing your pet experiences. You?ll find out that most people went through the same trials and tribulations that you did and that they also managed to cope with it. Different ways and means of dealing with your pet can be revealed to you, and you can even pass on your knowledge of how to deal with your recalcitrant pet.

The one thing that you shouldn?t do however by using an online vet, is try to diagnose and treat your pet by yourself. You don?t have the necessary medical background so take your pet to see the veterinarian. It?s the best thing that you could do ? the online vet is no substitute for the real thing. Just like an online doctor is no substitute for the real thing either.

Since most everyone who owns pet will want to keep their pets healthy, there?s always a demand for information regarding pet grooming. Not only that, in some places there are special pet grooming centers available as well. In these places you can take you

August 17th, 2008 by

The more up market of these pet grooming centers has grown up around the areas where people with money to throw around live and who can afford some of the finer things in life for their pets as well. If you go to Beverly Hills in Los Angeles you?re bound to see more than one of these pet grooming places.

However that doesn?t mean that you too can?t afford to take your pet to one of these pet grooming centers. There can be one in your town as well, you don?t need to be living in the lap of luxury to have one.

Otherwise you could do what most of the population does and do your own pet grooming. This is a great way to bond with your pet as well, and if they like the whole grooming thing then they?ll be your slave every time you even bring up mention of the words pet grooming.

Unfortunately for me I had no such luck, and every time I even mentioned the word bath, my dog would run for the hills (not literally) and it would take all my time just to go and find him and coax him into a nice bath. Quite by accident I found out one day that he liked showers so that did make my life easier, but he still had that inbuilt dislike of being given a bath. I was beginning to think that maybe he was a cat in disguise, so much did he hate the thought of a bath!

My own personal pet grooming experiences with my dog however, led me to believe that taking him to a pet grooming center would just be abysmally embarrassing to me since at that point I didn?t even need to say the word ?bath? he just guessed my intentions and ran away anyway.

I also felt that pet grooming was wasted on him since all he did right after the painstaking bathing process was to run outside and roll around on the ground, thereby undoing any good that I had done to him when I bathed him. Pet grooming wasn?t for me and it certainly wasn?t for my dog, but you should try it, perhaps you?ll have a more rewarding time of it than I did.

Like everything else these days the veterinary bills for your pet are also out of this world. And just as you need health insurance have you ever thought about getting your pet health insurance? It?s not as bizarre as it sounds and might help you in the l

August 16th, 2008 by

Your pet is also an integral part of your family and you should treat it so. After a while a pet stops being just an animal and will become a bona fide family member, and you wouldn?t let a family member suffer through lack of proper insurance would you. So getting your pet health insurance isn?t really all that insane, and in the long run it could even save you money.

How so? Well with the continuing rising costs of just about everything as the years wear on, your health insurance could help to save you from having to spend large sums of money all at once. Think about it, what happens if your pet gets hurt? Perhaps he will break a leg, perhaps he?ll have rough-housed with the wrong animals. Then what happens, you need to give your pet good medical care and attention but it?s been a few days since your last pay packet, and you?ve taken out a mortgage on your house.

Do you tell the vet, hey I can afford only this much do the best that you can with that amount. You might be lucky and not get thrown out of the clinic, or you might get laughed at and your pet given a set of common vitamins to take because that will fix all his problems.

Or you could be smart about it and get your pet health insurance to cover for all these unlikely events, and cover all your bases. In the short term it won?t cost you more than a few extra dollars, and in the long run at least you can be assured of care being available immediately for your pet should the need arise.

And when your neighbor who only laughed disbelievingly at you when you told him about getting your pet health insurance, laughs even harder when you tell him that it actually came in handy, you can just smile. Because you know that his laugh is slightly strained, since his cat is even now recuperating from coming into contact with something that was harder and faster than it was, a car crossing at the intersection.

You got your pet health insurance and now your pet has the best of all medical facilities at his disposal, while your neighbor had to pay through his nose to get his cat?s bones back together and splinted. And don?t forget the cost of medications! Now who?s having the last laugh.

If you?re looking for a pet to keep the long lonely hours at bay then you might want to consider pet adoption. Or if your kids want a pet and you can?t say no to their beseeching little faces you can think about pet adoption. But before you do go and adop

August 15th, 2008 by

Some people even think of their pets as their children, and ultimately this is what it will amount to. Unless you?re looking at a cat for your pet adoption scheme, then be prepared to have to pander to its every needs and whims. And just like with a young child, you?ll need to house train it! You?ll also need to teach your pet some obedience, especially if you get a dog.

Cats on the other hand are slightly more easier in that they?re independent creatures who will only look at you and come to you when they need a free meal ticket. You also probably won?t be able to teach a cat to behave itself, and a special behavior school for cats probably doesn?t even exist. That doesn?t mean that you?ll have to take cats off your pet adoption list. It just means that you?ll need to be aware of the nature of your cat.

Birds are an easy choice for pet adoption but be warned, they can be noisy, especially some species who like to get up with the rising sun and sing you a lovingly screeched chorus at the top of their lungs. And they have no discrimination whether it?s your weekend or not. You?ll also need to constantly clean out their cages, keep enough bird seed and water around, and remember to never let it loose in the house if you also went and got a cat when you were doing the whole pet adoption thing.

There are a few places that you can look into if you want to adopt a pet. These can be animal shelters, pet stores, or perhaps even a neighbor or friend who?s moving away and can?t take their pet with them. Then again, if you only want a trial run before you start your pet adoption process in earnest, pet sitting your friend?s pet while they?re away for a whole year might give you an insight of what?s needed from you. Then again it won?t be the same as having your own pet, so if you think you?re ready go ahead with your pet adoption plans. There?s nothing better than being the proud owner of a cute little puppy, or kitten, or bird, or, well you get the idea right.
