Does Your Dogs Diet Contain Enough Fatty Acid?

August 22nd, 2008 by PetGuru

Does your pet’s skin and coat look shiny and healthy, if not this could indicate the need for more fatty acids to be in your dog’s diet

A dog’s diet affects every aspect of his body as well as the skin and coat. If your dog’s diet has the right amount of fatty acids, then his coat and skin will appear healthy. Fatty acids in your dog’s diet will prevent dry skin and dandruff. A dull coat may well mean you need supplements of fatty acids in your dog’s diet.

Do not just assume that adding fatty acid supplements to your dog’s diet is always the best thing to do. If your dog’s coat is already in a good condition, adding more EFAs will not help improve your dog’s health. The fatty acid supplements, such as omega 6 and 3, should only used for dog’s with diagnosed skin problems. Always take advice from your vet before adding any supplement to your dog’s diet. Your vet will be happy to talk with you about the best form of EFAs and let you know the appropriate dose you should add to your dog’s diet.

You must provide EFAs to your pet through your dog’s diet, as fatty acids are not produced by your dog’s body. If your vet advises additional supplements of fatty acids, you should consider asking about linseed or sunflower oil.

Within a short period, such as four weeks, you should see a big improvement in your dog’s coat and skin. Watch the miracle of fatty acids work in your dog’s diet. When seven weeks have passed, you should see a dramatic change for the better in your pet’s health.

Omega 6 fatty acids is present in manufactured dog food at effective levels. Supplementing omega 3 will help to improve the ratio and make a difference in your pet’s health. Fish and flax seed are very good sources of omega 3 fatty acids. But always be cautious and ask your vet before you do any form of supplementation. Also take note that some forms of fish may not be safe to be part of your dog’s diet.

Supplementing your dog’s diet may not be necessary. The only way to decide if your dog’s diet does need extra fatty acids is to visit your vet, so you can both talk about your pet’s health. Never decide to medicate your dog without first seeking the advice of a professional, this is because your dog’s diet needs to contain the right balance of nutrients. Good sources of EFAs are flaxseed, linseed, and sunflower oil. Your dog’s diet is the first step in giving your pet overall health and a happy life with your pet for years to come.

Using Aquarium Air Pumps

August 21st, 2008 by PetGuru

Aquarium Pump Demonstration

When setting up a home aquarium, it is important that you properly set up the aquarium air pump. Without the aquarium air pump, the fish will not be able to breath and most would eventually die. Here are some of the essential things you should know about setting up an aquarium air pump.

The Need For An Aquarium Air Pump

Almost all aquariums will need an aquarium air pump. In most cases, the air pump pumps air through the tubes, into the water and through the filter. They provide the needed oxygen that most tropical, saltwater and freshwater fish need for survival. There are different types of air pumps. The type of aquarium you have and the number of fish you have in your tank will determine what type of aquarium air pump you should buy.

Air Stones And Bubble Wands

One of the easiest and most common aquarium air pumps are air stones and the bubble wands. These are ideal for smaller aquariums and tanks. With this system, one end is attached to tubing and air circulates through the tubing and into the water through the stone. This type of air pump circulates air while creating bubbles in the water.

Under Gravel Aquarium Air Pumps

The under gravel aquarium air pumps are those systems that are place under the gravel in the bottom of the tank. The air is pumped through tube and then up through the underwater gravel. This type air pump is better suited for larger aquariums or tanks. The under gravel air pump is nice because it is easy to conceal inside of the aquarium and it gives it a more natural look.

How To Use An Aquarium Air Pump

The use of an aquarium air pump is really easy. You purely follow the instructions that come with your air pump. Basically, you take out the air pump from the box, put it into the aquarium and start it. If the air pump attached to a filter, then you have to clean it many times over, because it gets very dirty. Make sure you read the directions closely when you have a new air pump. That is best way to learn to use it properly. If you have any product specific questions, most air pumps have a toll free number on their box that you can call, or you can simply ask your questions to the local pet store employee.

Aquarium Angelfish Species

August 21st, 2008 by PetGuru

No aquarium is complete without at least one Angelfish. There are more than twenty varieties of aquarium Angelfish species. Any one of them will add color and drama to your home or office aquarium.

Varieties of Angelfish

One of the most popular aquarium fish species is the dwarf Angelfish. Because of its petite size, the dwarf Angelfish is perfect for a small home aquarium. The Coral loveliness Angelfish has a red body with bluish-black and orange fins. It will grow to a maximum size of four inches, and is easy to care for. The Eibli Angelfish grows to a length of six inches. It has a tan body with vertical brown-colored stripes and very distinctive black blotches that cover the entirety of the back of the fish. The Flame Angelfish can safely live in a reef tank. This dwarf aquarium Angelfish species is six inches long and has an orange-red body with black strips running from top to bottom.

The Orange-black Angelfish is an alternative popular aquarium fish species. This three-inch long, dark blue fish has a golden blaze that runs from the face down the dorsal fin.  The half-black Angelfish is a difficult aquarium fish species to care for. This fish comes in colors of grayscale, except for its eye, which has a vivid orange accent.

Herald’s Angelfish is four inches long and is a buttery lemon yellow, with a brown-colored accent at the eye. The Lemonpeel Angelfish is another difficult fish to raise and care for. Like Herald’s Angelfish, the Lemonpeel Angelfish is bright yellow with a dark semicircle near the eye.

Barred Angelfish is only four inches long, with black and white vertical strips extending from head to tail. The Barred Angelfish is also difficult to care for. Potter’s Angelfish is yet another difficult aquarium fish species to own. It is a lovely fish, with a blue body and reddish fins.

The Pygmy, or Cherub, Angelfish is remotely easier to keep. This blue-bodied fish has an orange yellow head and grows to a length of three inches. And the Rusty Angelfish lives easily among coral reefs. Four inches long, it has a tan body with dark spots and red near the rear.

Omnivorous Fish Species

All dwarf Angelfish are omnivores, eating both animals and vegetables. Macro-algae are their vegetable matter of choice. Other than the Flame Angelfish, Dwarf Angelfish aren’t considered safe around reefs. Add them at your own risk if you have a reef tank. However, if you have an average aquarium fish tank, Dwarf Angelfish will thrive in their environment and provide you with many enjoyable hours of fish observing.

What The Heck Is An Aquarium Overflow Box?

August 21st, 2008 by PetGuru

Also known as siphon boxes or prefilters, an aquarium overflow box helps keep your air pump and filters working by making sure they won’t be damaged by any power outages.  If you have a goldfish aquarium of fewer than 40 gallons or if your tank has been thriving for years AND you have working spare filters and air pumps, then you don’t have to worry about adding on an aquarium overflow box.

Mainly For Salt Water Wet Pets

Aquarium overflow boxes are used mostly by professional aquariums and hard-core aquarium hobbyists as insurance for their expensive and vital equipment.  If the power goes out, then water can back up to short circuit the air pump or the filtration unit.  Some folks make their own aquarium overflow boxes but there are also ready made ones.

Power outages can also lead to your tank suddenly overflowing.  If your tank is not on the ground floor level of your home and it is more than ten gallons, then you should really consider some kind of aquarium overflow box.  A filled tank with gravel or sand and ornaments weights hundreds of pounds.

How To Tell If You Really Need One

Most salt water tanks will have some softhearted of sump pump that are far stronger than for a freshwater tank.  When it’s on, the water is kept level because it’s moving around all of the time.  But when the power goes out, the water has nowhere to go except into the tank and onto your floor unless you have an aquarium overflow box.

Get a lot of old towels and newspapers around the floor of your tank, because things might get wet.  Get a bucket and a coffee can to bail if need be.  If you can, arrange for a friend to turn the power on and off while you are there at the tank.  Turn off the power.  If the water level suddenly rises more than one inch — or if you have a suddenly saturated floor — then you know you need an aquarium overflow box.

Going Shopping

Aquarium overflow boxes are available at many pet stores and aquarium forte stores and their online equivalents.  There are ones specially made for big freshwater aquariums, so be sure you have one for fresh or salt water for whatever tank you have.  They vary in prices (like everything else) from under $50 (US) to $200 (US).  Most work with a gravity flow system so you don’t need to break out a drill.

Your Dogs Diet Can Lead To Protein And Kidney Failure

August 21st, 2008 by PetGuru

Research has indicated that higher levels of protein in your dog’s diet could lead to kidney failure. Do you know if what you are feeding dog is safe?  Are you harming the health of your furry friend by giving too much protein in your dog’s diet?

The studies that showed a connection to high protein levels and kidney failure that the started concerns about protein levels in a dog’s diets was not researched properly. The research was performed on rats, not dogs.  Rats mainly eat plants as their normal diet. Therefore a rats biological makeup would mean it would have trouble digesting a diet containing high levels of protein. Rats have difficulty excreting protein due to their natural dietary needs, not because the high protein diet causes kidney failure.

So, where do we stand on protein in your dog’s diet? Dogs are naturally omnivorous. In the wild, dog’s would hunt or scavenge for food. The dog’s diet would normally be of both animals and plants. Naturally dogs are meat eaters too.  because of this, a dog can easily cope with a diet consisting of 30% protein or more.

When the protein intake is lowered in a dog’s diet, renal function does not improve. Renal lesions are not less likely to form when a dog is being fed a low-protein diet.  It is not until a blood urea nitrogen, or BUN, test indicates a level of 75, then a reduction in protein intake should be considered.

If you have worries about how much protein is in your dog’s diet, you should make a appointment with you vet. Your  vet can advise you on your dog’s diet.

It is not correct that dog’s can not normally digest high levels of protein. Kidney problems do not result from having high levels of protein in your dog’s diet. Large amounts of protein are digested safely in your dog’s diet, particularly when they mainly come from animal origins.

Ten amino acids should be given in your dog’s diet through protein.  Only twelve of 22 amino acids can be produced in your dog’s liver.  Because of this meat such as heart, spleen, and meat by-products should all be in your dog’s diet.

If you purchase high-quality dog food it should contain meat as the main ingredient. This will provide the right amount of protein in your dog’s diet. If you think about a dog in its natural environment. Would you see a wild dog grazing in a cornfield at mealtime?

Senior dogs should not be put on lower protein diets just because of age.  In fact, some older pets require a dog’s diet that is higher in protein than when they were at a younger adult stage.  Unless your vet advises not to, you should always provide your pet the advantage of quality protein in your dog’s diet.

Feeding your dog protein should not cause you concern.  We all want what is best for our dog’s and nature tells us that protein will help your dog to live a healthy life. If you have questions about protein and kidney failure in your pet, then you should speak to your vet about your dog’s diet.

A vet would not offer you any food that is not right for your dog’s diet, so this may be a good place to start from. If your vet advises on a particular type of diet for your dog, this may be due to health reasons, then your vet may be the only place to find the exact food for your dog’s diet.

How Treats Affect Your Dogs Diet

August 21st, 2008 by PetGuru

Most people just do not know the importance of choosing a healthy dog diet. They do not take the time or make the effort to consult there trusted vet about a healthy and nutritious dog diet. It is important to know, even is you use dried food, canned dog food, or make it yourself, that you are most probably not supplying your dog with a vitamin rich healthy diet.

Most people give there pet a treat to chew, such a rawhide one, these given in moderation are fine. But you also need to consider, that any treat you give your pet, is a part of your dogs diet and therefore will have an effect in your pets health. The question you need to ask yourself is, do you give your pet to many treats?

What type of treats you give your pet makes i big difference to there diet. One of the worst things that can be done, is to give table scraps or junk food to your pet. Junk food that you eat becomes junk food for your pet. Also a mistake that can easily be made is to give your pet what is considered as healthy food for humans. Why? Because being healthy food for humans does not necessarily mean it is healthy food for your dog.

A good example of this is raisins, they are healthy for us, but can be extremely detrimental to the health of your dog. You should always try, when giving treats or it is snack time for your pet to make sure it is a healthy one.

Rawhide treats often spark controversy. Some vets and pet owners feel they are not a healthy treat for your pet. While others feel that rawhide treats are good for the dental health of your dog as well as supplying them with some amusement. As always when in doubt you should consult your vet for there opinion . If you do decide to include rawhides in your dogs diet, do so in moderation. If they are not given in moderation they can cause thin stools.

For the most part, dogs don’t care if you give them a baby carrot, rawhide chew, or a milk bone, they are just happy to receive a snack. If you do provide various treats during the course of the day, then you may need to consider altering your dogs diet, this will help avoid obesity in your pet. Giving your pet to many treats may be fun for your dog and you, but the downside of this can be serious health problems.

Such treats as, Ice cubes, small bits of apple, and baby carrots are terrific healthy treat ideas for you to consider when choosing a healthy diet for your dog.  These treats will make little difference overall to your pets diet and this way, you will be able to focus solely on the food that is consumed during there mealtime.  Your dogs diet needs to be healthy one, this will ensure a long and happy life for your pet.

Ferrets-They Become A Passion

August 20th, 2008 by PetGuru

Would you like to know more about ferrets but just do not know where to begin or look? There are millions of other ferret owners who are overwhelmed by the large volumes of information available to them, about this charming and often comical furry creature.

You may be trying to get a pet ferret, or living with someone who already has a ferret. You may all so simply be interested in the behaviour of these musk-producing mammals, here are a few basic things that you can consider first, before you get started with keeping a ferret and it becomes a passion.

Ferrets like skunk’s are also able to produce musk. Some countries allow you to remove the glands responsible for their musk production, this obviously will stop them smelling so much. But in countries like the United Kingdom and Australia you will find that this is not really necessary.

There fur is shiny and smooth to touch because of the natural oils produced by them. Regular bathing will remove some of these oils, which is not a good thing for your pets health. They also grow long nails, so a regular nail-cutting session will be in order for ferret owners.

There are many different colors and breeds available for pet owners. Breeding them is quite easy, especially when the ferret is mated with a pole cat, this was often done in ancient times. The younger the ferret is, the more difficult it is to look after. But then if you are able to obtain one that is still a kit, you will have the advantage of training it from a very young age.

As they grow older, they will need the company of other ferrets. Older ferrets will often will display domination or superiority to the younger ferrets. They also have the tendency to develop very close almost family like cliques and may not be as open to accept new ferrets in their circle easily. .

Regulations vary from country to country, so when you are caring for your ferret, always make sure that you are properly acquainted with the regulations of the country you live in. You will find that some countries do not allow ferrets to be domesticated and become house pets, while other countries have no restrictions on keeping them as pets.

By nature, ferrets are adventurous and curious creatures. you will need to interact with your pet at least once a day, this will help satisfy there curiosity and for them to be happy under your care. They also like to dance in a strange manner when excited and this may often look like they are ready to attack, but in reality, they are just expressing their enjoyment.

Since ferrets are extremely adventurous creatures, you will have to keep an eye on them frequently. They have the tendency to swallow objects that can be poisonous or damaging to their digestive system. On top of that if they are not constantly supervised, they may be prey to some other animals like snakes and hawks on there daily roam about,

Ferrets became popular as pets in America only in the 1980’s. Ferrets have been used for hunting for many years, mainly rabbits and rats, this is because they are well capable of entering rabbit warrens and tiny spaces. Their natural curiosity and lack of fear, makes them really effective aids to hunters. Even the Romans found many uses for them.

Cat Eye Care-Why It Is Important?

August 20th, 2008 by PetGuru

Cats eyes have often been used in horror films. But as a pet owner, you will know that the cats stare is really the complete opposite of what is portrayed in films. That is why cat eye care, is so very important for you to know.

How do cats say I love you? well this is through their eyes, of course. This is why you should never be frightened by there gaze. So how does this work? First of all, the cat stares at you for a long time. And after that, it blinks its eyes slowly. Some people call this the cats kiss. But you should also know that this is your cats way of showing you that it loves you.

But how do you return the favor? This is easy, all you need to do is follow your cats lead. Stare at it for a long time and then slowly blink your eyes. See? Cats eyes have also be used for romantic films as well.

Do not believe the horror films you see. Cats do not and never have had a third eye. Their eye sight is really far better than a humans. Instead of a third eye, what cats have is a third eyelid. This is called a nictitating membrane.

This inner eyelid protects the eyes of the cat from harm and also from dryness. You will always notice that when a cat is sick, this membrane will be some what closed. This should always alarm enough for you to call your vet or get your cat to them fast as possible.

But this third eyelid will also show once a cat is happy. So you will know what kind of mood your cat is in just by looking at the membrane.

You should always observe the pupil of your feline friend. A change in size of one of the pupils can often be an indication of an inflammation. It can also be a sign of a kind of a neurologic, disorder, this is called Horner’s Syndrome. Or worse, it can also indicate tumors or injuries in the central nervous system.

Never believe what others say that cats are color blind. They do see some colors. They may not see them as clear as human do, but its not true that they cannot see any colors at all.

Cats can also see clearly over long distances. There vision is very different from peoples. There vision will blurry if they are looking at objects that are very close to them.

Yes it is true, cats do have the nocturnal vision. But they can not see in complete darkness. Do you see the muscles on their iris that surround the pupils of their eyes? They are constructed in a way that it narrows into a vertical split when they are exposed in the bright lights. And it opens fully when they are in a quite dim light.

This feature of the cat may be traced back to their roots. They can use this feature to hunt for food during the night, that is if they were left out in the jungle or left with no one to care for them.

So you must forget about the horror movies that you have seen. Now it is time to put some effort into your cats eye care. Never let a minor ailments worsen. Always call your vet immediately when you think there is something not right or amiss. You do not want your cat to lose their sight or even worse lose their lives. Just remember it is always better to be safe than blind.

Cat Diabetes-And How You Should Treat It

August 20th, 2008 by PetGuru

If your cat has diabetes then cat care is important to your pets health. You will need to take the appropriate steps to make sure your pet can lead a normal life. It is unfortunate that pet cats have there own form of diabetes. It is important as a pet owner you learn how this will affect your pet and how you can help your cat lead a normal healthy life.

There are two types of cat diabetes, that could affect you pet. The first type is caused by the lack of  production of insulin, while the second type is the inability of the cats body to process insulin as it should do. just like in humans, diabetes can affect a cat at any age. But it normally appears in a pet in its later years.

Your cat will start to display symptoms that will tell you there is something wrong. These symptoms are very similar to the one in humans, You would start to notice your cat would require more fluid and would also urinate more. Because of your pets inability to process any glucose, then you will start to notice some weight loss.

Other symptoms you may see your cat are vomiting, loss of appetite and general weakness. Diabetic cats also  start to have poor skin and coat condition, as well as breathing problems

If your pet cat starts to display the above symptoms, it would be very wise of you to take your pet to your local vet. This way you can have your cat tested for sugar levels in there blood as well as in their urine. it is better to have both tests done, because any cat that feels under any form of stress, will show a spike in there blood sugar levels. By having both tests done, you will be able to confirm if your pet cat really has diabetes.

There is no cure for your cats diabetes as of yet. There diabetes can be controlled through a various means, and for cats it is done by diet and weight control. Giving your pet a diet high in fiber and carbohydrates would be ideal for diabetic cats, especially if they are over weight.

By using this type of diet, you will control your cats weight and blood sugar levels. There are also some oral medications available that your trusted vet may recommend. These should help to maintain a suitable blood sugar level.

Owners of diabetic cats, also will need to monitor their pets glucose and insulin levels. This is for those pet owners who will have to give there cats insulin injections for their diabetes. But be warned, you need to be carful to avoid giving an overdose of insulin as this will be fatal to your pet.

Cat care and diabetes should always go together, this will ensure that your pet can lead a normal healthy life. If you provide the right care for diabetic cats, then you will still have many happy years to come with your pet.
