Is A Wide Leather Dog Collar Right For Your Dog?

August 31st, 2008 by PetGuru

All dogs need a dog collar because it’s usually required by law.  You might like the look of wide leather dog collars.  But is this the right kind of collar for your dog?  You need to take in mind your dog’s physique, temperament and any training issues he or she might have.  You might discover that the best dog collar isn’t a wide leather dog collar at all.

If Your Dog Pulls

Some dog trainers will recommend a wide leather dog collar to help discourage dogs from pulling strongly on the lead.  This is better than using a choke chain (which can often cause spinal damage in dogs) and far better than a dog shock collar (which should be banned).  Stay far away from any trainer who advises the use of shock collars.

But, in the end, no gadget will help your dog stop pulling, not even a wide leather dog collar.  For example Labradors need patient and persistent training to get them to stop.  When they pull, you stop and do not go any further.  You only walk when the dog is behaving.  It’s hard to do, but it’s the only sure cure.

This writer has a strong pulling dog.  I just got used to it.  I did teach her to stop and look back at me on command.  The pulling actually makes her seem a little wild and kept undesirable people away.  In order to keep her from choking, I attach her lead to a chest harness instead of her collar (which is nylon and not a wide leather dog collar).

How Big Is Your Dog?

Wide leather dog collars need to be on dogs with necks big enough to wear them comfortably.  Your dog might not be the biggest in the world, but if he has a massive neck, then perhaps it will take a wide leather dog collar.  Breeds that can take wide leather dog collars include mastiffs, Bullmastiffs, Neapolitan mastiffs, any of the bulldog breeds and some Great Danes.

Special Occasion

Genuine leather is beautiful and durable, but is also very expensive and can be difficult and time-consuming to clean.  You might also have a dog that can’t resist the smell of genuine wide leather dog collars and decides to eat it.  Not all dogs will eat leather, but quite a lot will.  Also, if any animal-rights activists are nearby, you will get the evil eye from them for using genuine leather.

You might want to save the wide leather dog collar for special occasions such as going to the dog photographer and have a nylon collar for everyday wear.

Your Dogs Diet And How It Affects Its Outputs

August 31st, 2008 by PetGuru

If you know anything about computers, then you will know what term GIGO means, it stands for garbage in and garbage out. So now you ask what has this to do with your dogs diet? Well your dog certainly is not a walking, tail wagging, barking computer, but your dogs diet definitely effects it in the same way. What food you feed your pet will eventually come out in the end.

The diet you feed your dog will have a considerable effect in its outputs. There are of course other factors that play a roll in this, such as nerve, illness and the weather. You can tell a lot about the health of your pet, by the outputs they produce.

Cleaning up after your pet is not the most pleasant job, but it is a necessary one that we all have to do. Being selective with your dogs diet, will make this task more pleasant and a easier job to do.

If you feed your dog a diet that is high in fillers, then the excrement will be large in size and often runny. Thus, making it hard to pick up. This is not recommended to do, but if you give your pet leftovers from the table, then when you go to clean up it will not be nice to do. This is because the outputs of a pet eating an unhealthy diet is just plain messy, smelly and large.

To many treats, such as rawhide or bones will change your dogs stool. You need to monitor how treats affect your dogs outputs, this way you can determine how healthy the snack really is for your hound.

If you feed your dog a balanced healthy nutritious diet, that is of high quality, then you will notice a difference in the outputs. Cleaning up after your pet may not be at the top of your list of things to do, but it will be a far easier task and much more tolerable to do, if your dogs diet is healthy and nutritious.

Always consult your veterinarian before you decide what type of diet is best for your dog. If you decide on dry food, then look for one that lists meat as the first ingredient. This way you will reduce the amount of fillers that your pet consumes.

Feeding your pet on a regular schedule is important. When you are deciding what your dogs diet will be do not simply focus on what you are feeding your pet, as its just as important to focus on when you feed your dog. If you feed your dog at consistent mealtimes, then you will be far more able to predict your dogs potty schedule. This also plays an important role when you are house training your pet.

By helping your pet eat a balanced healthy nutritious diet, then you are taking the first and most important step to maintaining a healthy diet for your dog. Your dogs diet, when you monitor it, will keep things running smoothly, it will also minimize outputs and mess. But be warned about to many treats in your dogs diet. By knowing what goes into your pet, will reduce the garbage and mess coming out.

Ferret Care And The Best Way To Keep Them Healthy

August 30th, 2008 by PetGuru

Ferrets are available to purchase at your local pet store or breeder, also you may be able to find one at a animal shelter. Because they live a long life just like a cat or dog, it is important that you know how to care for them and keep them healthy, happy pets.

Ferrets are nocturnal animals that like to sleep during the day. When they wake up, it is best to let them out so they can play and exercise. When you do let your pet out, it is best to make sure all electrical cords are secure, any small item are put away and all small spaces are blocked so they can not squeeze in to them. Doing this will stop your ferret from getting lost or inuring themselves.

These mammals are carnivores and need a strict diet. What this means is they is they should only be fed meat or poultry products as they need a high protein diet to keep them healthy. There are many ferret food products available for you to purchase on the internet. But never make the mistake of feeding your pet cat food.

Besides from food, your ferret will obviously need water. It is advisable to put this in a water bottle, this will stop them spilling the contents.

Your ferret must never be left unattended while in your home. If you do have to pop out then use a cage, that is what they are there for. The ideal cage size is one that measures 18” x 18” x 30” or a little bigger. The main thing here is for you to make sure that it is big enough for them to move around in.

Ferrets are curious creatures and love toys, purchasing some is useful if you have to come home late from work so they will have something to do until you return. The toys you buy will have to be robust, as they will need to be able to withstand their sharp teeth. Again these are readily available to you on the internet.

You need to house train your pet, this way you will keep your home clean. A good way to do this is with a litter box, start by putting some of there waste inside the box and carrying them when you see that they are about to do it.

You should reward them with a light snack, if they do this correctly. Giving them a treat can also be done when you teach them how to do some neat tricks.

Some people will tell you its best to buy a ferret while it is still at a very young age, this is because they are easier to train while still young, than an older one. But despite the age, they still make a good pet and can still be trained at an older age, with a bit more effort.

Ferret care is not difficult, all it takes is a bit of common sense and you will be able to handle it ok. You are sure to enjoy the company of your furry friend for many years to come and might even decide to add another one so your pet has company.

An Overview Of The English Tack Items

August 29th, 2008 by PetGuru

English bridle

Horse tack is the short name for all of the accessories and items that go along with owning and riding a horse. These horse supply items provide many different accessories for different ways of riding horses. There are several main types of tacks, one most notably being the English tack. Horse tack can be bought in many different places, but some stores specialize in particular tack supplies.

There are several main components to the English tack that are different than Western horse tack. Of course, the basic elements are there; the saddle, bridles, stirrups, bits, and harnesses, but for English horses, many of these different items have their own unique twist. Horse riding has been a popular sport in Europe for many years, almost since horses became used for riding, so it is not surprising that they have their own styles of horse supply. The English horse equipment is used for most Olympic sports, and is also used for most other equestrian sports.

The English saddle is different from the western saddle because it is smaller and allows the horse a greatest range of motion. The English bridle has a Cavesson noseband, and is mostly used because it has the greatest functionality. Another English bridle, called the double bridle, has two bits for maximum control by the rider. English riders also use a breastplate to protect the horse in dangerous activities, such as jumping and fox hunting. There is also a difference not only in accessories between the English and Western styles of horse supply, but also in riding style. English riding focuses more on style and precision, while Western riding focuses more on abilities that the horse and rider can do together.

If you want to purchase English tack supplies for your horse, there are many different options. Most tack supply shops offer both the English and Western styles of tack. There are also many different discount tack stores that sell discount riding accessories and tack supplies. These used items can really cut down on costs for those who can’t afford all new materials. The English horse tack is sometimes harder to find, but there are still options. Many stores sell the equipment pieces online. Shipping online can sometimes be expensive, but it can be worth it to get the equipment you need shipped to you. Professional advice can be a huge help in deciding what equipment to purchase.

English tack accessories are necessary for certain types of riding. If someone is involved with this style of riding, then they will need the English horse tack items that go along with it. There are many different shops that sell horse tack, so it should not be hard to find what you need. If this style is new to you, then consult with a professional before buying equipment.

Types Of Small Aquarium Sharks - Two Of The Most Popular

August 27th, 2008 by PetGuru

When setting up an aquarium people quickly find out that there are many tropical fish to select from. There are school fish such as Guarmis and Tetras and there are aggressive fish such as Oscars and Cichlids. But a fish that has recently become more popular for the small home aquarium is the small aquarium sharks. If you want to take care of your new shark here is some information on how to maintain them in your home aquarium.

The Epaulette Shark

The Eqaulette shark is one of the more ideal small sharks for a small aquarium as they like to live in small confined areas. They are usually white with brown spots all over their body. Unlike most sharks they do not swim around the tank but prefer to swim on the tank floor all day looking for food. At times they look like eels with their slender bodies, their bodies allow them to slip around the rocks and other aquarium decorations.

Although they are not the smallest of the aquarium sharks, they are also not the largest. Eqaulette sharks can grow quite large, an adult can grow up to eleven inches long. So when selecting one ensure that your tank is large enough for them to move around when they grow.

The Epaulette shark eats mainly on small crabs and worms. They may even eat shrimp and other small fishes. They have very small teeth, so larger pieces of food should be avoided. They can bite and chew, but their teeth are not designed to cut the food. So, keep their food pieces small at all times.

The Red Tail Shark

One of the most popular small aquarium sharks is the red tail shark. This small shark is semi-aggressive fish its unique beauty is a definite plus in any aquarium. They have a solid black body with red tip tail which is easy to identify. These sharks are not very social so it is recommended that you only keep one per tank.

Red tails love hiding as it provides them with a sense of safely and security, so provide them with nice little hiding places. As they are an aggressive fish and will pick on other fish you need a tank that is large enough to accommodate all the fish

Like the Eqaulette Shark Red tails like to search the bottom of the tank for food. They will eat most fish flakes, live food or other food that ends up at the bottom of the tank. They like to eat at least once per day.

There is a large variety of sharks at the pet shop to choose from but two of the most popular are the Epaulette shark and the Red Tail shark for small aquariums. Do some research if looking to buy one for your own tank as they are not like other fish, they do require specialized attention. Even so they are a wonderful addition to any aquarium.

The Bad Dog Myth

August 27th, 2008 by PetGuru

Dog Breeds

How often do you hear an owner shout, ‘Bad dog’ when what really needs to be said is ‘bad handler’. The feeling is very irritating when a dog jumps on you and puts paw prints over everything you’re wearing. When your front yard is the chosen venue for the next door dog to leave his many calling cards, this is also frustrating. The dogs are no worse than the children of the neighbor. What else other than bad behavior can you expect from animals and kids when the concerned adults have no idea what they are supposed to do?

The dog ought to be given pre-set behavioral limits when inside or when it is taken to public places. Sensible owners take the help of dog trainers who teaches them proper handling methods without breaking the natural spirit. Your vet office or local pet stores can put you in touch with trainers who hold group discussions with the owners along with their pet; or enroll in an online course to tackle any problems instantly.

A section of this training is involved with tutoring the owner how to handle his pet. There is a saying amongst trainers however that it is far easier to train dogs than the people that own them! Dogs need to practice when they are taught to walk with leash when they are taken out and for this they need to walk around in a yard or any other area. Owner and other residents get irritated when these animals bark even if it is a typical occurrence. When they bark, they are simply communicating with us; a reprimand him might give them the wrong signal and confuse them.

So why does a dog bark? Well, just like a young child or baby, it needs attention, food or something to drink. The noise of a dog barking can alarm the owners of a burglar intrusion so attempting to stop him from doing this may work against you. It is wrong to encourage a puppy to bark and then punish him for barking when he attains adulthood.

Trainers teach you how to promote the dog behavior you prefer by praising your pet and giving them the occasional treat. How do you make your puppy stop the undesired behavior? Well, simply learn to reward him when he does something which is ‘desired’ behavior. Don’t waste your time trying to teach a dog some behavioral pattern which contradicts his natural breed. To make your pet follow specific behavioral training, you ought to choose one from a breed with can give you what you need. Dedication, patience and a loving attitude are needed if you wish to train a dog.

Your Dogs Diet Should You Avoid Table Scraps?

August 25th, 2008 by PetGuru

A dogs diet should not contain any table scraps. A dogs nutritional needs are not the same as a ours. Yes we eat some of the same things, but feeding your pet table scraps is one of the biggest mistakes you can make. A dogs diet does not need all the added ingredients we put into our own meals.

People have often have weight problems like obesity. Well a dog can have this problem also. If your dogs diet involves mostly table scraps, then the chances are that your dog will not maintain a healthy weight. Even a few pounds over weight can make a large difference in the quality of health and length of your pet’s life.

When you have a dog that is not to particular what it eats, it can be very easy to let your pet become your garbage disposal at home, but really, this is a very bad idea. Certain foods we eat can harm your dog and therefore should never be considered to be part of your dogs diet. Grapes are one example, grapes have been known to cause serious problems for dogs. Chicken bones can also be a problem for your dog. Large quantities of chocolate can be very dangerous if allowed in a dogs diet.

When your dogs diet is not the best you can give it, then your pets outputs will be greater in size, smell, and mess. You will see the benefits of choosing a healthy diet for your dog, as you will notice that your pet is healthier and happier.

There are the odd occasions when a supplement or treat from your kitchen may be okay to use, but never in excess. You should talk to your vet about the use of healthy snacks for your dogs diet. Many vets recommend you give your pet ice cubes or pieces of carrot to snack on between there regular feeding times. By providing your pet these healthy alternatives to people food gives you the chance to choose the right healthy and nutritious snack for your dogs diet.

The next time your pet starts eyeing your food, what you need to do is redirect there attention. Do not use your table scraps. Instead give your dog a refreshing ice cube to munch on. A baby carrot will keep your dog happy and make you feel good about the right choices you have made for the nutritional value of your dogs diet. If you follow these steps you will know that you are your pet a high-quality.
