Flea Infestation in cats
February 24th, 2010 by KittyKitty
The cute new addition to your family home could very well have fleas, though this may be hard to believe. A kitten may have aquired fleas from their original environment and so it is not uncommon for them to bring them into your home when they intially come to live with you. Take for example the mother cat having fleas, it’s then likely the kittens will too. There is the possibility that even though a mothering cat wasn’t allowed out, fleas ould be brought in by other pets. Clthes and feet are ways in which humans frequently bring fleas in to the home.
A flea comb is an essential item to have in your home. The second the kitten arrives at your home, take it to the bathroom and comfort it as you run a flea comb over it. You should pay special attention behind the ears, and at the tail base, which are likely spots to find fleas. One is all that is required to ascertain that this issue needs addessing.
In your kitty grooming box, you should have picked up something that will both kill off the fleas, and be safe for a newborn kitten.Check the instructions, and have the product ready in case you find a flea on your new introduction. It’s important to remember that your kitten will stilll be feeling insecure at this time, so do everything you can to let it feel at ease.In order to keep the feline calm try to keep away all other family members and pets. Once he’s clean, allow him to meet the rest of the family, but don’t allow him back into the cat carrier, or on to any bedding/toys that had contact with him before you did the flea treatment. Please ensure that it is throughly washed out prior to its return.
In most cases a kitten will not have fleas when it arrives in its new home, but taking a few simple precautions, so that you’re prepared “just in case” he does, will make a potentially big job painless for both you and the kitty.
